Baseball Suffers Doubleheader Setback at Johnson & Wales

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The Anna Maria College baseball team dropped a pair of losses to the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University on Sunday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action. The Wildcats took game one by a score of 11-3 before taking a 15-0 shutout victory in game two.

Catcher Brandon Cesino and left fielder Carlos Sanabria both batted 2-for-3 and combined for five RBI to lead the Wildcats to victory.

The AMCATS scored two runs in the top of the first, but the Wildcats answered with 11 runs in four innings to take control.

Dane Compton pitched a five-hit, three run game with six strikeouts in six innings for the Wildcats before giving way to James Harlow, who did not allow a hit and fanned one in the seventh inning.

Nate Frederick (Worcester, Mass.) took the loss for Anna Maria, surrendering nine hits, seven earned runs and two walks in two innings of work. He struck out two batters. Both Tanner Jakola (Leominster, Mass.) and Trevor Brown (Gardner, Mass.) pitched two innings each to complete the game—Brown gave up just one hit and struck out three.

Senior Corey Andrade (Mashpee, Mass.) led the AMCATS at the plate, batting 2-for-3 with two RBI. Nate Gray (Kingston, N.Y.) also finished 2-for-3 and scored a run.

Keith Grant scattered four hits in five innings of work before giving way to Taylor Pacific and Mike Davlos, who combined for a six-hit shutout win. Grant pitched six strikeouts, while Pacific had one and Davlos fanned three out of the four batters he faced in the seventh.

The Wildcats produced all but one of their runs in the first and third innings. The team totaled 12 hits, including a game-high three hits in a 3-for-4 effort by starting left fielder Tom Elkow. Elkow also batted-in a game-high three runs.

Andrew Sawyer (Dracut, Mass.) took the loss on the mound for Anna Maria, giving up three hits, six earned runs and five walks in less than an inning of work.

Gray again batted 2-for-3 while Andrade, Jourdon Wydra (Bristol, Conn.) and Jonathan Roy (Worcester, Mass.) finished with a hit apiece.

The AMCATS will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Norwich for a 2:00 p.m. GNAC doubleheader.
