Rams Take 9-0, 5-0 Shutouts against AMCAT Baseball

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass.—The Anna Maria College baseball team dropped both ends of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader to the Rams of Suffolk University on Thursday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex, falling 9-0 in the opener and 5-0 in game two.

With today's results, the AMCATS fall to 6-10 overall and 1-3 in GNAC play, while the win boosts the Rams to 6-9 overall and 2-0 in league action.

 Suffolk 9, Anna Maria 0

Suffolk pitcher Josh Desai pitched a seven-inning two-hit shutout to aid the Rams to the 9-0 win. He gave up one walk while fanning nine, facing just two batters above the minimum.

Jon Lapolla, Sean Cameron, and BJ Neil all finished with two hits each for Suffolk, while Luke Ronchi drove in a team-high two runs. The Rams held a 2-0 lead after three innings and doubled their lead in the fourth inning before tacking on a final four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Matthew Leahey (Rutland, Mass.) took the loss on the mound for Anna Maria, giving up five hits, four earned runs and two walks while striking out one. Tanner Jakola (Leominster, Mass.) gave up three hits, three earned runs and two walks in two innings of relief.

Senior David Julian (Sterling, Mass.) and freshman Nate Frederick (Worcester, Mass.) both tallied hits for the AMCATS.

Suffolk 5, Anna Maria 0

In game two, starting Suffolk pitcher Frank Tierney gave up just one hit in six innings of work and the Rams added seven hits of their own at the plate to take the 5-0 win.

The AMCATS' lone hit was a blooper to shallow right-center field by Nate Frederick that was blown around by the wind, eventually falling untouched between three Suffolk fielders.

Paul Pollano pitched a quick inning of relief, facing just three batters and striking out one.

Camden Frederick (Worcester, Mass.) took the loss for Anna Maria, scattering seven hits, four earned runs and a walk while fanning two batters.

The Rams scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and three in the bottom of the fourth. Julien Plana finished the game 1-for-2 with a run and two RBI, while Jon Lapolla and Rob Marks both batted 2-for-3.

Anna Maria is idle for the next five days due to the Easter holiday. The team will travel to Norwich for a 2:00 p.m. GNAC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 8.
