Luis Frias '83 To Be Inducted into New England Basketball Hall of Fame

WORCESTER, Mass.—Anna Maria College men’s basketball alumnus Luis Frias ’83 will be inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame at a major ceremony at the DCU Center in Worcester on Saturday, August 8th, 2015.

Frias will join other honorees representing a variety of categories, ranging from high school players to senior adults who still play the game at age 65 and over.  The New England Basketball Hall of Fame dinner has become one of the largest sports dinners in America.  Approximately 1,900 people will be present at the ceremony on August 8th

Frias, a graduate is a member of the class of '83, was a trailblazer in the history of the Anna Maria College basketball team.  He was the face of AMC basketball in the early 1980s.  During his three seasons at AMC, Luis averaged 26.9 points and 13.5 rebounds per game and still holds many records at the College, including a fifth-place all-time ranking in scoring with 1,617 career points. Frias also holds career records in points per game (26.9), blocks in a season (83), and rebounds in a season (220).  

The two-day Hall of Fame event will begin on Friday with activities taking place at the iconic St. Mary’s High School Gymnasium in Worcester. The August 7th program will include the inaugural New England Basketball Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete Game featuring high school scholar-athlete teams representing the communities of Boston and Worcester.  On August 8th, the festivities will include a series of panel discussions featuring the likes of Hall of Famer’s David Thompson and Dave Cowens, and a special ceremony in celebration of the History of Women’s Basketball in New England.
