Men's Basketball Cant Hold On In Loss To Mariners

NEW LONDON, CT. – On Tuesday, January 30th the Anna Maria College men's basketball team traveled to the Yarnall Athletic Center in New London, CT to take on the Mitchell College Mariners for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference matchup. The AMCATS lost the game 69-67.

After a long back and forth first half of the game, the Mariners took the lead as they found themselves leading 38-28 over the AMCATS with just under two minutes left to play in the half. After a timeout the AMCATS managed to scrape together 4 more points to cut the Mariners lead down to 6 points at the end of the first half. 

The Mariners started early in the second half as they began pulling away from the AMCATS. It wasn't until late in the second half that a layup from Sean Zabari would give the AMCATS the lead over the Mariners. Spending the last six minutes of the game battling back and forth, the AMCATS held the lead before giving up two free throws for the Mariners to take a one point lead. After taking the lead, the Mariners sank one more free throw to close the game out with a two point lead over the AMCATS.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Gabe Armstead led the AMCATS with 15 points going 3 for 5 on the free throw line.
  • Trent Smith posted a career high of 12 points in the matchup.
  • Smith also went 2 for 2 in three point attempts.
  • The AMCATS went 11 for 16 on the free throw line for nearly a 70% success rate.

WHAT'S NEXT: 

The AMCATS will be back in action on Saturday, February 3rd where they will head north to New London, NH to take on the Colby Sawyer Chargers for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference Matchup. Opening tip off is set for 3:00pm.
