WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: Clark too strong for Anna Maria

THE BASICS:

- The Lead: The Clark University women's volleyball team got back on the winning track Thursday evening with a 3-0 victory over Anna Maria College in a non-conference match at the Fuller Activities Center. The Cougars won for the fifth time in their last six outings by scores of 25-12, 25-10 and 25-11.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-The visitors scored seven unanswered points early in the first set to turn a 3-2 scored into a 10-2 lead, as senior Jacqueline Jimenez-Maldonado (San Francisco, Calif.) had three kills and junior Ana Mercado (Guaynabo, P.R.) added two winners.

-The teams traded points through the middle of the set, which included two kills by Anna Maria senior Rebecca Foti (Bedford, N.H.). The Cougars put the set away, 25-12, on the strength of two kills and a service ace by Mercado.

-The AMCATS hung tough in the second set, keeping pace with the Cougars and tying the score at 7-7 with two more kills by Foti and one by freshman Abygail Chapdelaine (East Longmeadow, Mass.). It was a 9-8 Clark lead when the Cougars ran off 12 consecutive points, including four kills by senior Marina Ramos (Guaynabo, P.R.) and three by freshman Kendra Campbell (North Kingstown, R.I.). Clark went on the win the set, 25-10.

-After Foti scored the first point of the third set for the AMCATS, Clark went on another long run with 12 consecutive points, including six winners by Campbell and two from Jimenez-Maldonado. After the teams traded a few points, Mercado posted three straight kills for the Cougars and Clark closed out the set, 25-11, and the match, 3-0.

Stat Leaders

-Campbell led the Cougars with 13 kills and a .632 attack percentage (13-1-19), while Jimenez-Maldonado had 11 kills and a .320 percentage (11-3-25) and Mercado finished with 10 kills and a .450 percentage (10-1-20). Junior Rachel Webb (Celina, Texas) ran the offense and posted 36 set assists.

-Junior Rayme Quiban (Seattle, Wash) led the Cougars with 20 digs and six service aces, while Campbell and senior Madi Garrity (Duxbury, Mass.) combined for three blocks.

-Foti lead the AMCATS with seven kills, and junior Sarah Lathrop (Waterford, Conn.) posted five assists.

-Junior Carolina Garcia (Springfield, Mass.) was strong in the back row for the home team with 14 digs, and Lathrop and junior Victoria Falco (Marlborough, Mass.) chipped in with eight digs apiece.
