2012 Volleyball Captains Announced

Paxton, Mass. – Head volleyball coach Samantha Shomo recently announced that junior middle hitter Sandy Acosta (Lawrence, Mass.) and sophomore setter Megan Leyton (Eastham, Mass.) will serve as the captains for the 2012 AMCAT squad.  The duo will lead Anna Maria through a difficult schedule this fall, and will look to improve in the GNAC standings.

"We are looking forward to this upcoming season under the guidance of our captains," said second-year coach Shomo.  "Acosta has been a natural leader on the court for years now.  She leads by example and embodies the competitive drive that I want each team member to mirror. Leyton has been a pleasant surprise for us.  She has developed into a strong setter with the natural ability to direct the team on and off the court.  The team naturally gravitates towards her and is ready to look to her for leadership."

Acosta, who participated in all 26 matches for Anna Maria, led AMC to a 3-23 (0-13 GNAC) record in 2011. She led the 2011 squad in kills (163), total attacks (576) and blocks (72).  Acosta holds the school record for kills with 536, total blocks (251), block solos (205), block assists (46) and attack attempts (1817). She is second on the all-time list for sets played and matches played both records are within reach in 2012.

Leyton, who spent the majority of 2011 backing up senior setter Alicia Bonneau, looks to be a rising star in 2012. She finished second on the team in assists with 88 in 14 matches, averaging 2.26 assists per set. Leyton recorded two different games with 23 assists, good for 6th all-time in AMCAT history.

The Lady AMCATS will open up the 2012 season in early September.
