PAXTON, Mass. – Freshman Tara Cowin (Newry, ME) scored three goals, for a hat trick, in her first collegiate game to lead the Monks of St. Joseph's (ME) to a 3-1 victory over host Anna Maria College today at AMCAT Field. The Monks start their season 1-0 while AMC drops to 0-3 on the season.
Cowin picked up her first goal of the year, just 5:45 into the game, on a nice push past that went just inside the right corner past AMCAT goaltender MJ Steinmetz (Grafton, Mass.), teammate Melanie Allen was credited with the assist.
The Monks scored at 12:14 when Cowin put a rebound in off a Sarah Bartell (Exeter, NH) drive from the top of the circle.
AMCAT freshman Katherine Bant (Johnstown, NY) scored her first collegiate goal at 21:21 to cut the lead in half heading into the break.
Tara Cowin put the final touches on the 3-1 win by knocking home a beautiful drive from the right wing just :44 seconds into the second half.
The Monks held the edge in shots (16-5) and penalty corners (9-2).
St. Joseph's (ME) goaltender made 2 saves in the victory while her counterpart Steinmetz had 8 in the loss.
