AMCATS sweep Rivier in GNAC Twinbill

Paxton, Mass. -  Junior John Sullivan went 5-for-6 with three double and three RBI's as the  Anna Maria College baseball team swept Rivier University in a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference games today at New Balance Field in Worcester, MA. The AMCATS took game one by the score of 9-2 and delivered a 13-3 pasting in game two. With the win AMC improves to 8-11 (2-2 GNAC) while the Raiders drop to 3-15 (0-2 GNAC) on the season.

Andrew Montiverdi and Julian Diaz both had four hits on the day.  Montiverdi picked up two RBI's while Diaz had a pair of doubles and four RBI's. Senior Justin Hyland batting in the DH spot delivered five RBI's for the AMCATS while Lucas Davis and Tyler Stuart each notched wins.

 

GAME ONE: Anna Maria 9 Rivier 2

Anna Maria used a five-run first inning to post the early lead. Seniors Mike Guarnieri (Wallingford, CT), Justin Hyland (Spencer, MA) and Padraig Gilman (Leominster, MA) each platted runs with deep sacrifice flies. After Andrew Montiverdi (Worcester, MA) earned a walk, catcher John Sullivan (Southbury, MA) delivered an RBI double to left center followed immediately by a RBI double by freshman Andrew Risotti (Templeton, MA) for the 5-0 lead after one complete.

Rivier put two runs on the board with a in the top of the third inning with a Jeremy Bell two out triple that scored Marc Medeiros and Kyle Bowser. AMC added a run in the bottom of the frame with a Risotti RBI groundout to make the lead 6-2.

Anna Maria would add a single run in the 5th on an RBI double by Julian Diaz (Providence, RI) and two more runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 9-2 final.

Sophomore Lucas Davis (Spencer, MA) pitched four complete innings for his second win of the season. Davis struck out seven Raiders while allowing just two hits. Sophomore Brandon Normandin (Oxford, MA) earned his second save of the season with three scoreless innings in relief.

 

GAME TWO: Anna Maria 13 Rivier 3

After two scoreless innings the AMCATS exploded for five runs in the home half of the third frame. With the bases full of AMCATS, Hyland slipped a 2 RBI single to right field, followed by a Gilman sacrifice fly. Two batters later, Hyland scored on a Montiverdi single to left center.  Montiverdi would come around and score on a Sullivan RBI double to left field.

AMC quickly put the game out of reach in the fourth inning extending the lead to 9-1. Hyland added another 2 RBI's while Montiverdi and Sullivan added their second RBI's of the game.

The AMCATS added another four runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth, including a bases clearing double by Diaz.

Rivier tallied runs up in the top of the fourth with a King RBI single and in the seventh with a Velez two out, 2-RBI single for the 13-3 final.

Tyler Stuart pitched six strong innings for the AMCATS to earn his third win of the season. Stuart fanned 9 Rivier batters while allowing just one earned run on the day.  Phil Weihn pitched the seventh inning while striking out four batters.

Anna Maria returns to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Saint Joseph's College (ME) in a GNAC doubleheader staring at Noon at New Balance Field.
