WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: Johnson & Wales sweeps AMCATS, 3-0

The Basics:

-Score: Johnson & Wales 3, Anna Maria College 0 (25-13, 25-8, 25-10)

-Records: Anna Maria College (3-8, GNAC 0-2), Johnson & Wales (11-0, GNAC 1-0)

-Location: Paxton, Mass. (Fuller Activities Center)

- The Lead: The defending Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) champions Johnson & Wales University powered past Anna Maria College Wednesday evening, 3-0. Sophomore Elizabeth Hamilton (Canton, Mass.) led the way with a team-high 10 kills and four service aces.

How It Happened:

-The Wildcats remained undefeated by sweeping all three sets for the ninth straight match and 10th time in 11 outings this season. JWU has won 44 consecutive regular season matches.

-The AMCATS hung tough in the first set and trailed only 6-4 before JWU ran off eight straight points to take control. It was as close as nine points (19-10 and 22-13) before the Wildcats scored the final three points to take the first set, 25-13.

-The Wildcats scored the first nine points of the second set before the home team got on the board. The visitors never let up and led by as much as 18-4 before the AMCATS called their second timeout. JSU went on to take the second set, 25-8.

-JWU started strong again in the third set, scoring the first four points and taking an 8-2 lead. Hamilton continued with her firepower as the Wildcats scored six straight points to pull ahead 20-5, and closed out the match with a 25-10 verdict.

Inside the Numbers:

-Freshman Hannah Dolan (San Clemente, Calif) added seven kills, classmate Kelly Delaney (Calais, Maine) chipped in with six and classmate Bella Oldham (Irvine, Calif.) contributed five winners to bolster the Wildcat attack as the team recorded a .337 attack percentage. Oldham also posted a team-best 11 digs.

-Freshman Mikayla Arimura (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) made 24 set assists in two sets, and sophomore Brylee Frank (Palm City, Fla.) had 12 assists in her only set.

-Senior Rebecca Foti (Bedford, N.H.) and junior Sarah Lathrop (Waterford, Conn.) paced the AMCATS with five kills apiece. Senior setter Kerri Earle (Bethel, Conn.) ran the offense and finished with nine assists.

-Junior Carolina Garcia (Springfield, Mass.) led the AMCAT defense with 10 digs.

The AMCATS are back in action next Wednesday, Sept. 27, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match-up at Saint Joseph's College of Maine (6:00 p.m.) Johnson & Wales puts its unbeaten record on the line on Saturday, Sept. 23, in a GNAC tri-match in Nashua, N.H. against Suffolk University (1 p.m.) host Rivier College (3 p.m.)
