Volleyball Drops Two at Johnson & Wales Tri-Match

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University women's volleyball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference tri-match with Anna Maria and Simmons today at the Wildcat Center. JWU ousted Anna Maria, 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-14), in the first match of the day while Simmons topped Anna Maria, 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-13), in the 12 PM game before the Wildcats dropped a five set heartbreaker to Simmons 3-2 (19-25, 22-25, 25-18, 25-19, 17-15) in the final match of the afternoon.

Junior middle Marissa Bunnewith (Millbury, Mass.) led the way for the Wildcats in match one with 12 kills and two service aces while hitting an impressive .733 against the AMCATS. Classmate Paula Cadavid (Pawtucket, R.I.) recorded double-digit kills as well for the Wildcats with 11 to go along with seven digs. Freshman Rebecca Foti (Bedford, N.H.) led the way for Anna Maria with nine kills and four digs while classmate Telliah Bursie (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) registered five kills.

In the middle match, Simmons dropped the first set but came back to win the final three to take the 3-1 win.  Freshman Emmee Ashby knocked down 13 kills for the Sharks and also managed two blocks while fellow rookie Sarah Woodward connected for 12 kills and seven digs in the victory. AMCATS junior Jessica Goulet (Lawrence, Mass.) had eight kills, five digs and a block while Foti, Bursie and senior Jacqueline Clinton (Walpole, Mass.) each had six kills each in the setback.

The final match of the afternoon saw the Wildcats win the first two sets before dropping the final three, including a 17-15 thriller to close out the match. Cadavid paced JWU with 16 kills and 14 digs while senior Alyssa Drapeau (Biddeford, Maine) tallied 14 kills and 15 digs in the setback. Ashby had a game-high 18 kills while Woodward was right behind with 17 kills for the Sharks. Simmons sophomore Andalyn Duke and Wildcats junior Kellen Tensen (New Canaan, Conn.) had 57 assists each.

The Wildcats are now 5-8 on the season and 2-1 in the GNAC while Simmons improves to 2-10 and 2-1 in conference play and Anna Maria drops to 6-7 and 1-3 on the season.

Anna Maria will be back in action Tuesday, September 30^th for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game at Salem State.
