AMCATS Sweep Wildcats in Softball Action

Paxton, Mass. – Sophomore Cristina Turley (Waterford, Conn.) was an efficient 6-for-6 with 5 RBI's to lead Anna Maria to a non-conference sweep of visiting Wheelock College in softball action on Wednesday afternoon at AMCAT Field.  Anna Maria took game one, 10-1 and pounded out fifteen hits in the nightcap for an 18-1 victory.

With the wins the Lady AMCATS end an 18-game skid and move to 4-28, while Wheelock remains winless at 0-20.

Freshman Samantha Miller (Dudley, Mass.) was 4-for-7 at the plate, including a double and a home run with three RBI's.  Sophomore Nichole Lowe (Saugus, Mass.) and freshman Elizabeth Haggerty (Charlton, Mass.) each contributed three hits for the AMCATS, while Haggerty had 3 RBI's and Lowe plated five RBI's in the win.

Wheelock's Katie Fleming delivered her teams two RBI's and was 3-for-5 on the day.

 

GAME ONE: Anna Maria 10, Wheelock 1

Anna Maria took a 2-0 lead in the home half of the first inning by capitalizing on a pair of Wheelock miscues to take the lead without recording a hit in the frame. AMC doubled the lead in the second, Lowe singled in duo of runs scoring Turley and Haggerty who had singled and walked previously with one out.

Wheelock put a run on the board in the top of the third when Fleming delivered a line drive home run to centerfield to cut the lead to 4-1. AMC responded with two more runs in the bottom of the frame, Turley picked up her second RBI and Tabitha Ruggeri (Sturbridge, Mass.) walked with the bases full to push the lead to 6-1.

The AMCATS added four insurance runs in the fourth for the 10-1 final.

Pitcher Nicole Lowe earned her second win of the season, allowing just one run on four hits, the righty struck out three Wildcats on the day.

 

GAME TWO: Anna Maria 18, Wheelock 1

Tabby Ruggeri opened the nightcap with a home run to deep left field to help pace the AMCATS to the win. Next, Lowe followed with a walk and went to third on a Lindsay Bond (Webster, Mass.) infield single. On the next pitch, Bond would steal second and Lowe would come across to score after beating out a rundown. Bond would come home on a Samantha Miller double to center field. AMC would add a pair of runs on a pair of walks with the bases loaded and a Ruggeri sacrifice fly to post a 6-0 lead after one complete.

Anna Maria would increase the lead to 10-0 in the second, highlighted by a pair of RBI singles by Turley and Haggerty and a 2 RBI double by Lowe to left center.

Wheelock's Fleming notched her second RBI of the day in the third with an RBI single.

Miller would crush her second home run of the season over the left field fence in the bottom of the third; Anna Maria would add seven more runs in the inning for the 18-1 final.

Freshman Angela Vousboukis (Swampscott, Mass.) posted the win going the five inning distance allowing just one run on five hits with four strikeouts.

Anna Maria returns to action on Friday when they travel to Lasell College for a GNAC double header starting at 3:00 pm.
