Blue Jays Nip AMCATS in GNAC Twinbill

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – University of Saint Joseph freshman Mary Sciglimpaglia (Norwalk, Conn.) went a combined  5-for-5 with two doubles, a triple and three RBI as the Blue Jays swept Anna Maria in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader, 6-0 and 5-2 Tuesday at St. Joseph.

St. Joseph improved to 23-9 overall and 13-5 in the GNAC. Anna Maria is 2-28 and 1-18. The Blue Jays have won 10 games in a row, which matches a school record set from April 8-19, 1999.
Patti Sciglimpaglia (Norwalk, Conn.) allowed two hits, two walks and struck out six in five innings to earn the win in game one. Emily Hummel (Hebron, Conn.) struck out six, walked one and allowed one earned run in six innings to get the win in the second game. Freshman Emily Vigue (Lebanon, Conn.) finished up both games with a total of three shutout innings and earned her fourth save in the late game. Both starting pitchers have 10 wins on the season.
USJ scored two unearned runs in the second inning of game one to start the scoring. Patti Sciglimpaglia and Mary Sciglimpaglia started the inning with consecutive singles. Patti came around to score on an error and Vigue drove in Mary with a sacrifice fly.
The Blue Jays put up single run in innings three through six. Emily Hummel (Hebron, Conn.) doubled to lead off the third and scored on a sacrifice fly from Mary Sciglimpaglia. Vigue had a one-out double in the fourth and scored on a wild pitch. Ashley Gall (Stafford Springs, Conn.) led off the fifth inning with a home run to left field – her team-leading fifth of the season, which extended her career school record to 14. Haley McCall (Lebanon, Conn.) drew a one-out walk in the sixth, stole second and came home on a single up the middle from Stephanie Valerio (Wolcott, Conn.)
Anna Maria's Angela Vousboukis (Swampscott, Mass.) took the loss, but allowed just two earned runs in six innings.
Anna Maria scored in the top of the first inning to grab its only lead of the day. Tabitha Ruggeri (Sturbridge, Mass.) doubled to right-center to start the game, stole third and scored one a one-out base hit to left from Lindsay Bond (Webster, Mass.) USJ tied it in the second when Mary Sciglimpaglia tripled to center field and scored on a passed ball.
USJ took a 3-1 lead in the third inning on Mary Sciglimpaglia's two-out, two-run single. The Blue Jays pushed their advantage to 4-1 in the fourth on a single from Hilary LaRosa (Meriden, Conn.) and McCall's RBI-double.
 

Anna Maria's Nichole Lowe (Saugus, Mass.) singled in the fifth and eventually scored on an error to pull the AMCATS within 4-2. But the Blue Jays closed the scoring in the sixth on a triple from Shauna Sullivan (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and a sacrifice fly from LaRosa.

Lowe and Justine Lalonde (Shirley, N.Y.) each had two hits in the second game for the Amcats and Lowe had a total of three hits on the day.
Anna Maria hosts Wheelock Wednesday in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
