Softball : Cadets March Past Lady AMCATS

Paxton, Mass. - Norwich University swept a pair of games from  Anna Maria College today in Great Northeast Athletic Conference softball action today at New Balance Field in Worcester, Mass on a freezing cold and windy day. The losses drop the AMCATS to 2-15, 1-5 GNAC, while with the win the Cadets remain undefeated in conference action at 8-0, 13-4 overall on the season.

The AMCATS were led by freshman Elizabeth Haggerty (Charlton, MA) and sophomore Justine Lalonde (Shirley, NY) who each collected three hits on the day. Samantha Miller (Dudley, MA) smacked a triple and a homerun at the plate and pitcher Nichole Lowe (Saugus MA) suffered both losses on the day.

GAME ONE:

Trailing 2-0, the AMCATS cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second. After Miller opened the frame with a 3-bagger to right center, sophomore Cristina Turley (Waterford, CT) notched an infield hit for the RBI. AMC tied the game in the home half of the third inning with a Lindsay Bond (Webster, MA) RBI single to right field scoring senor Tabitha Ruggeri (Sturbridge, MA) who had tripled.

Norwich broke the 2-2 deadlock in the top of the fifth inning. Back-to-back doubles by Briana Day and Angie Hershberger drove in two Cadet runs to push the lead to 4-2.

Norwich added eight runs in the top of the sixth inning and Miller cracked her first career home run in the bottom of the frame for the 9-3 final.

GAME TWO:

In the nightcap Norwich scored runs in each of the five innings. They opened the game with two runs on RBI's from Erin Clark and Day. Anna Maria answered in the bottom of the inning when Nichole Lowe scored on a Norwich failed pick-off attempt at third base to cut the deficit in half.

Norwich added 11 unanswered runs over the final 4 innings.

Down 13-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Anna Maria scratched out two more runs. Tabby Ruggeri laced a double to center field to score Haggerty and Makayla Leite (South Easton, MA) who had both singled to get on base.

Anna Maria returns to action on Friday afternoon when they travel to Suffolk University for a 3:00pm GNAC doubleheader.
