Wildcats Claw Win Over AMCATS in GNAC Doubleheader

East Providence, R.I. -- The Johnson & Wales University softball team won a pair of games against Anna Maria College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference double header at Pierce Field on Monday afternoon.  Johnson & Wales won game one 4-0 and finished the sweep with a 6-0 victory in game two.

JWU jumped out to the early lead when Taylor Cwalinski (Jackson, N.J.) hit a lead-off triple to right center and scored on an AMCAT miscue. Freshman Kristen Solari (Old Bridge, N.J.) singled with one out and later scored on an RBI single by classmate Jessica George (Andover, N.H.) to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead after one inning.

Cwalinski gave JWU the 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when a double to center scored freshman Carly Cabral (Warwick, R.I.). Cwalinski scored on a Solari single up the middle to extend the lead to 4-0 after four full innings. Both teams threatened in the remaining innings but neither could produce as JWU held on for the 4-0 victory. Cwalinski went the distance in the pitching circle striking out 13 and allowing just three hits. Four Wildcats had two hit performances in game one.

AMCAT senior Tabitha Ruggeri collected two hits, while Makayla Leite added a single in the fourth inning.

JWU got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning when George reached and advanced to second on an error and scored on a single to center by junior Rachel Marino (Northbridge, Mass.) giving the team a 1-0 lead. Marino scored the second Wildcat run on a Cabral double down the right field line in the fourth inning. A two-run single by George put JWU up 4-0 after five then they tacked on two more after six for a 6-0 lead. Tayla Gardner (Orangeburg, N.Y.) picked up the complete game one-hit victory for JWU notching ten strikeouts while only walking one batter. Ruggeri had the only hit of the game for Anna Maria.

With the two wins Johnson & Wales is now 19-13 overall and 12-6 in the GNAC while Anna Maria falls to 2-26 and 1-16 in league play on the year. The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, April 16th when they travel to Newton to take on Simmons in a GNAC doubleheader, starting at 3:00 p.m.
