Softball Falls to Elms in Non-Conference Action

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College freshman right fielder Kierstan Skinner (South Windsor, Conn.) was 4 for 4 with three runs scored and sophomore catcher Gianna Gonyea (East Longmeadow, Mass.) was 3 for 4 with five RBI to help drive the Blazers to an 11-3 win over Anna Maria College in Tuesday evening's non-conference softball game at Cheryl R. Condon Field.

With the win, Elms improves to 3-8 on the season, while Anna Maria moves to 2-13 overall.

Batting as the visiting team, Elms plated five runs in the top of the first highlighted by a three-run double by Gonyea, an RBI-single from senior second baseman Alexandra Bonavita (Agawam, Mass.) and a sacrifice fly by senior designated player Sarah Buckley (Wilbraham, Mass.).

The Blazers struck for four more in the top of the second frame ignited by a two-run double from freshman shortstop Taylor Skinner (South Windsor, Conn.) and RBI base hits from Kierstan Skinner and Gonyea to give Elms a 9-0 advantage.
Anna Maria answered with two runs in the home half of the second when Justine Lalonde (Shirley, N.Y.) doubled to right field and Nichole Lowe (Saugus, Mass.) connected for an RBI base hit. The AMCATS then scored again in the fifth on an RBI triple down the right field line by Samantha Miller (Dudley, Mass.) to cut the lead to 9-3.

Elms crossed the dish twice more in the top of the sixth when Buckley scored on an Anna Maria miscue and Gonyea drove in Kierstan Skinner on her second two-bagger of the game to set the final score at 11-3.

Bonavita, Taylor Skinner and senior third baseman Rachel Butt (Agawam, Mass.) each finished with two hits in the winning effort.

Freshman pitcher Jamie Miner (Chicopee, Mass.) picked up her first collegiate win pitching five innings of relief allowing just one unearned run on three hits while striking out seven.

Lowe and Lalonde connected for two hits apiece for the AMCATS in defeat, while Angela Vousboukis (Swampscott, Mass.) suffered the loss in just 1.2 innings of work. Lowe pitched the final 4.1 frames and struck out three batters.

Elms returns to conference action on Saturday, April 6 at Mitchell College for a double-header beginning at 12:00 p.m. in New London, Conn.
