Lady AMCATS Snap 40-Game Streak, Down Penn. St. –NK, 6-1

Clermont, FL – The Anna Maria College softball team snapped a 40-game winless streak with a 6-1 victory over Penn State – New Kensington at the Dot Richardson Invitational during spring recess in  Clermont, FL. The Lady AMCATS dropped the first game of the day to Coe College 8-0.

Four different players collected two hits and pitcher Nichole Lowe went the distance for the win.

Trailing 1-0, the AMCATS tied the game in the bottom of the first. Senior Tabitha Ruggeri laced a triple to right center field to open the home half, the catcher scored when an errant throw went by the Penn State third basemen.

Anna Maria played solid defense the rest of the way holding the Penn State lineup to just five hits.

AMC doubled the score in the bottom of the second; sophomore Justine Lalonde hit the gap down the right field line scoring Kayla Lapierre who had singled to open the inning.

The AMCATS platted 4 more runs in the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Cristina Turley and Ruggeri picked up the RBI's.

Lapierre, Turley and Lalonde all went 2-for-3 on the day. Nichole Lowe pitched the complete game, scattering five hits and striking out three to earn her first collegiate win.

Congratulation to head coach Kristi Lyman, who picked up her first AMCAT victory.

GAME ONE

Freshman Elizabeth Haggerty collected two of Anna Maria's hits and sophomore Nichole Lowe had two stolen bases and a single in the 8-0 loss to Coe College.

Coe capitalized on a pair Anna Maria miscues to plate 3 runs in the first inning which would be all they would need as the Kohawks starting pitcher retired 14 of 15 AMC batters with strikeouts.

Sophomore Justin Lalonde opened up the third inning with a walks and back-to-back singles by Haggerty and Lowe had the bases loaded with two out for AMC, however power hitter Lindsay Bond was overpowered by Coe's pitcher and the Kowhawks were out of the inning.

Freshman Angela Vousboukis stared her first collegiate game for the AMCATS going 4 strong innings with four strikeouts.

After a day off the AMCATS will return to action on Thursday March 7th when the will face,  Finlandia University and Marywood University.
