Kalombo Lifts AMCATS Over Mountaineers, 3-1

THE BASICS:

-Score: Anna Maria College 3, Southern Vermont College 1

-Records: Anna Maria College (1-1-1), Southern Vermont College (0-3)

- The Lead: On a rainy Wednesday evening the Anna Maria men's soccer team earned their first victory of the season downing the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont College 3-1. Sophomore Gift Kalombo (Worcester, Mass.) lifted the AMCATS to victory with two goals on the night.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-The AMCATS hopped on the board first with a goal 10 minutes into play from senior, Derrick Casey (Worcester, Mass.). Casey dribbled into the box and fired a shot to the bottom right corner for the 1-0 lead.

-The Mountaineers responded seven minutes later to tie the game at 1-1 with a goal from freshman Jared Lacoste (Arlington, Vt.).

-With six minutes to play in the half Anna Maria was determined to score again. Kalombo took a shot over the head of Southern Vermont goalkeeper, Dylan Berg (Tampa, Fla.). The shot was saved by defender Devin Furphy (Cortland, Manor, N.Y.) before Kalombo was able to get another shot off that found the back of the visitor's net.

-The AMCATS took the 2-1 lead into the halftime break.

-The AMCATS took a 3-1 lead ten minutes into the second half as Kalombo beat two Mountaineer defenders and put the ball to the bottom left of Berg.

-The two teams battled it out on both ends of the field for the remainder of the game but the AMCATS were able to hold on to their lead and took the ultimate 3-1 victory.

 

BEHIND THE NUMBERS:

- Kalombo led the AMCATS to victory with four points on the night from two goals.

-Lacoste notched the lone goal for the visitors.

-Sophomore goaltender, Mark Robinshaw (Ashford, Conn.) earned the victory in net for Anna Maria and improves his record to 1-0 this season. He made nine saves on the night.

-Berg falls to 0-3 on the season and made seven saves in the loss.

-The AMCATS outshot the visitors 18-15. Southern Vermont was awarded five corner kicks to Anna Maria's two.
