MEN’S SOCCER: Mount Ida overpowers AMCATS

The Basics:

-Score: Mount Ida College 7, Anna Maria College 1

-Location: Paxton, Mass. (AMCAT Field)

- The Lead: Freshman Jonathan Santos (Kearny, N.J.) scored four goals and junior Juan Brenes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) added two goals and an assist Saturday afternoon as Mount Ida College defeated Anna Maria College, 7-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer clash at AMCAT Field.

How It Happened:

-The Mustangs came out on fire, putting three goals on the scoreboard in the first five minutes. Freshman Ethan Sweet (Claremont, N.H.) scored just 17 seconds into the game after a miscommunication by the AMCAT defense, and Brenes converted a penalty kick just one minute after the opening whistle to make it 2-0. Santos scored his first goal at the five-minute mark when he put in a rebound after the keeper knocked away a cross by Brenes.

-The AMCATS settled down and kept Mount Ida off the scoreboard the remainder of the first half, and got on the scoreboard themselves when sophomore Ryan Todesco (Southwick, Mass.) put in a header a minute before the intermission to make it a 3-1 contest.

-Mount Ida scored right out of the break in the second half to snuff out any AMCAT momentum, as Santos converted from right in front of AMCAT goal with an assist from freshman Brandon Dickens (East Hartford, Conn.)

-Santos completed a natural hat trick with goals in the 57th and 65th minutes. He found the top right corner after receiving a pass from Sweet, and headed in a corner kick by Braeden Krakosky (Sachse, Texas) eight minutes later. Brenes rounded out the scoring with his second of the game in the 70th minute.

Inside the Numbers:

-Brenes now leads the Mustangs with eight goals and three assists on the season, while Santos and Sweet have five goals and one assist each.

-Todesco's goal was his first of the season for the AMCATS.

-The Mustangs finished with a 15-6 advantage in shots.

-Senior Riley Ford (Guilderland, N.Y.) needed to make just one save in 70 minutes to earn the win for the Mustangs. Freshman reserve Joshua Barrows (Rochester, N.Y.) made one save in his 20 minutes in goal.

-Freshman keeper Jeffre Donahue (Rockland, Mass.) made five saves after coming off the AMCATS bench.

Up Next:

The AMCATS play their third straight home game on Wednesday (Oct. 11), hosting Massachusetts Maritime at 6:00 p.m. in a non-conference encounter. Mount Ida plays again on the same day and time against Fisher College at Hormel Stadium in Medford, Mass.
