AMCATS Fall to Clark

PAXTON, Mass. (9.27.11) – Junior Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) scored three goals, to give her 20 goals on the season, as the Clark University field hockey team had five second half goals to defeat Anna Maria College 7-2 in non-conference action at AMCAT Field on Tuesday night. The win improves the Cougars record to 7-1 while the loss drops the AMCATS back to 2-6 on the season.

Along with Melkonian's hat trick, Talian Fish (Philadelphia, PA), Christabelle Kozlik (Emigrant, Mont.) and Erin Murphy (Boxborough, Mass.) all found the back of the net. Junior Madelieine Lutts (Salem, Mass.) added a goal and an assist.

The AMCATS added goals by Marybeth McClune (Worcester, Mass.) off a scramble in front of the net between McClune and Clark goaltender Kate McGrath (Wilmington, Mass.) and freshman Nichole Lowe (Saugus, Mass) picked up her first collegiate goal in the second half.

After constant pressure for most of the first half, Melkonian tallied two quick unassisted goals just :53 seconds with three and a half minutes left in the first stanza, for a 2-0 lead. Melkonian had 8 shots on goal in the game.

Clark scored four more unanswered goals to start the second half to increase the lead to 6 -0 before the AMCATS made it 6-2.

Clark held the advantage in shots (34-3) and penalty corners (23-1) in the match. AMCATS' keeper Marita Steinmetz (Grafton, Mass.) had 16 saves in the loss.
