Leahey Earns Worcester All-Star First Team Honors

WORCESTER, Mass.—Senior Matthew Leahey (Rutland, Mass.) of the Anna Maria College baseball team was named a Worcester Area Baseball All-Star (WABA) first team selection, announced Wednesday morning.

The sixth annual Worcester Area Baseball All-Star team was selected by sports information directors representing nine Worcester area colleges and universities.

Leahey was named to the first team's utility position after splitting time between third base, first base, designated hitter, and the mound during his final season. The team's lone senior was a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) All-Conference second team selection after leading the AMCATS at the plate with a .331 batting average. He notched 41 hits on the season, including 15 for extra bases, while batting in a team-leading 25 runs.

He had his best game at the plate on April 2nd against Elms, when he batted 4-for-4 with a double, two runs batted in, and a run scored. On the mound, his best performance was a four-hit complete-game victory over Norwich on April 20th.

WPI senior Alex Venditti was named the WABA Player of the Year while junior Brendan King of Holy Cross was tabbe the Pitcher of the Year. Becker's Josiah Shepherd earned Rookie of the Year honors, while coaches Kevin Barnaby of Fitchburg State and Nick Puccio of Nichols shared Coach of the Year honors.
