Baseball Posts Season-High 17 Hits in 14-8 Win over Newbury

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass.—Sophomore pitcher Camden Brown (Gardner, Mass.) gave up just one earned run in 6.1 innings of work as the Anna Maria College baseball team claimed a 14-8 victory over the Nighthawks of Newbury College on Thursday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex.

The win boosts the AMCATS to 5-19 on the season, while Newbury falls to 11-16.

Anna Maria's 17 hits are the most tallied by the team this season, besting their previous high of 15 against Northland on March 10^th. The team's 14 runs are also the most scored this season, with the previous high of nine tallied against UMaine-Presque Isle on March 19^th.

AMCAT LEADERS

Offensively, the AMCATS exploded for 17 hits and 13 earned runs, led by senior Matthew Leahey (Rutland, Mass.) batted 4-for-5 with a triple and two RBI.

Junior James Marcello (Mansfield, Mass.) and sophomore Nate Gray (Kingston, N.Y.) both finished with three hits each, while sophomore Tanner Jakola (Leominster, Mass.) and freshman Connor Lavin (Leicester, Mass.) notched two hits apiece.

Sophomore Trevor Brown (Gardner, Mass.) successfully placed two RBI sacrifice-bunts from the nine-hole, one in the second inning and one in the seventh.

NEWBURY LEADERS

Newbury tallied eight hits over the nine-inning affair, led by Matthew Peluso (Woodbridge, Ontario) with a team-best 2-for-4 effort.

Batters one-through-seven all hit safely over the course of the game.

PITCHING

Camden Brown scattered six hits, five walks and a strikeout over his 6.1 innings before Zach Parker (Manchester, N.H.) came in for 1.2 innings of relief. Parker gave up one hit, a walk and struck out one. Daniel Chambers (Westfield, Mass.) pitched the last inning and gave up three earned runs, two walks and a hit.

For Newbury, Tim Brown (Orange, Conn.) scattered 13 hits and 10 earned runs over seven complete innings. He also fanned an impressive eight AMCAT batters. Patrick Argentina (Millerton, N.Y.) gave up three runs and four hits in an inning of relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Newbury took a one-run lead on an RBI single by Ryan Zahornasky (Shelton, Conn.) in the top of the first inning and held that advantage until Anna Maria scored twice in the bottom of the second, first on an RBI single by Lavin and then the go-ahead on Trevor Brown's first RBI sacrifice-bunt.

The AMCATS would not trail from there, posting a monster six-run fourth inning to lead 8-1.  Newbury cut the lead in half with three unearned runs in the fifth inning, but Anna Maria outscored the Nighthawks 6-4 over the final three innings to seal the victory.

WHAT'S NEXT

The AMCATS continue their four-game homestand on Saturday when they host Lasell in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. at Auburn High School. Newbury is also in action on Saturday in a noon doubleheader at Daniel Webster.
