Baseball Drops Two to Medaille on Opening Day

FROSTPROOF, Fla. – The Anna Maria College baseball team opened the 2016 season on Saturday with a doubleheader against Medaille College. Medaille was victorious in both outings, posting an 11-3 win in game one and a 16-7 victory in game two. The doubleheader marked the season openers for both teams.
GAME ONE
The AMCATS held a 2-0 lead through three full innings, but Medaille rattled off four runs in the top of the fourth and seven runs in the top of the seventh to claim the victory.
Senior Matthew Leahey (Rutland, Mass.) earned the start, scattering four hits, five walks and four runs (three earned) over four complete innings. He struck out five batters. Zach Parker (Manchester, N.H.) entered in relief and took a brunt of the damage, shelling out seven runs on four hits and two walks in 2.2 innings of work.
The AMCATS posted four hits at the plate, as Leahey, Jonathan Roy (Worcester, Mass.), Matt Elliiot (Attleboro, Mass.), and Connor Lavin (Leicester, Mass.) all recorded a hit.
Medaille totaled 11 hits in game one, led by Joe Napolitano, Kyle Powell, and Jared McStine with two hits apiece. TJ Derba, Kris Kruszka, Ryan Cooper, and McStine all batted in two runs each.
GAME TWO
Medaille took a five-run lead over the first two innings before Anna Maria scored a run in the top of the third as Camden Brown (Gardner, Mass.) tripled and then scored on a passed ball. Anna Maria would take a 7-6 lead after scoring four runs in the top of the fifth, but Medialle would score 10 unanswered runs over the fifth and sixth innings to claim the victory.
At the plate, the AMCATS combined for 11 hits. Brown finished 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run. Elliot and Liam Pickett (Oxford, Mass.) both batted 2-for-3 with a scored run.
Elliot earned the start and scattered 10 hits and nine runs (seven earned) in 4.1 innings of work.
Medaille totaled 16 hits, led by Daniel Luppens with four hits and three RBI. Travis Chavanne and Napolitano both notched three hits.

Anna Maria faces a Massachusetts foe tomorrow, taking on Gordon College at 9:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. in Auburndale, Fla.
