Lasers Beam to Twinbill Sweep over Anna Maria

AUBURN, Mass.—The Lasell College baseball team posted two victories over the AMCATS of Anna Maria College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) twinbill on Saturday afternoon at Auburn High School.

With the victories, Lasell improves to 11-12 overall and 3-3 in GNAC action, while Anna Maria drops to 5-21 overall and 1-3 in league play.

GAME ONE: LASELL 4, ANNA MARIA 1

Lasell pitcher Daniel Petr (East Haven, Conn.) pitched a no-hitter to lead the Lasers to the win in game one. He fanned four and walked three in the complete-game effort.

The Lasers scored all four of their runs in the first inning, capitalizing on four hits, including a two RBI double by Skylar Beckerman (Pensacola, Fla.), to take an early lead.

Anna Maria tallied their lone run in the bottom of the fourth as Matthew Leahey (Rutland, Mass.) reached on an error, advanced to second on a walk, and then scored from second on a fielding error by Lasell's second baseman.

It would prove to be the only offense that AMCATS could muster, as they put just one runner on base over the final three innings.

Lasell tallied eight hits in the victory, led by a 3-for-4 day by Hector Coscione (Newton, Mass.) and a 2-for-3 performance by Wes Hurty (Windsor, Conn.).

Freshman Matt Elliot (Attleboro, Mass.) took the loss on the mound for Anna Maria, scattering eight hits, four runs, four walks and two strikeouts over the complete-game effort.

GAME TWO – LASELL 9, ANNA MARIA 2

The Lasers exploded for 13 hits in the nightcap and wasted little time getting on the board, scoring two runs in both the first and second innings for an early 4-0 lead.

All nine Lasell starters recorded at least one hit over the seven-inning affair, led by centerfielder Evan Michalek (Berlin, Conn.) in the nine-hole with a 3-for-3 performance.

Lasell had their best inning in the top of the sixth, when they scored three runs on three hits and an error.

Anna Maria scored single runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Nick Feola (North Providence, R.I.) was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by James Marcello (Attleboro, Mass.).

An inning later, Leahey scored from third base on a single by Elliot.

Leahey took the loss on the mound for Anna Maria, scattering nine hits and five runs in five innings of work. Freshman Daniel Chambers (Westfield, Mass.) gave up three runs and three walks in an inning of relief before junior Gregory McGoldrick (Brooklyn, N.Y.) closed the game with an inning of work.

Casey Johnson (Windsor, Conn.) earned the complete-game victory for Lasell, scattering six hits and two runs over the complete game. He walked one and struck out six.

Junior third baseman Jonathan Roy (Worcester, Mass.) led the AMCATS at the plate by batting 2-for-3.
