Russo Scores Game-High 20 in Loss to Rams

BOSTON, Mass – Thursday evening, the AMCATS travelled to Boston to take on Suffolk University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play. Anna Maria was unable to follow up their win from Tuesday as they fell to the Rams 92-57.

For the AMCATS, senior guard Kristina Russo (South Windsor, Conn) scored a team-high 20 points in the defeat. Junior center Shannon Hofmiller (Oxford, Conn) added nine points for the visitors while also pulling down seven rebounds. As she has for most of the season, senior guard Maritza Gustave (Fall River, Mass) led the AMCATS in rebounds with nine, which was also a game-high. She was also one of three players to add six points to the tally off the bench along with senior guard Kayla Odegaard (Milton, Mass) and sophomore guard Gabriella Eldredge (West Boylston, Mass).

On the other side, for Suffolk, freshman guard Jenni-Rose DiCecco (Falmouth, Mass) scored a game high 21 points, 12 of which came from four three-pointers. Joining Dicecco in double-digit scoring were sophomore guard Alexis Hackett (Charlton, Mass) and freshman guard Gabriella DeComo (Portsmouth, R.I.) who scored 14 and 12 points respectively. Hackett also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Though she only scored eight points on the evening, senior guard Georgia Bourikas (Hull, Mass) reached 1,000 points for her career.

It took nearly three minutes for either team to score in this one but, Hofmiller started it off hitting two free throws which would be the AMCATS only lead of the game. From that point the teams would trade baskets for the next two minutes before the Rams took the lead for good. At the end of one period the 'Cats trailed by nine, 24-15. The second quarter was the best of the evening for Suffolk as they scored 30 points to the AMCATS 11 which separated the teams by 28 going in to the half, 54-26.

The second half opened with more Rams scoring as they went on a 15-5 run to begin the third quarter. Once the third period had finished Suffolk saw themselves out to a 41-point advantage, 77-36. Typical of most of their games all year, the fourth quarter was the best for the AMCATS defense and they were able to outscore the Rams by six, 21-15. Though it certainly wasn't enough as the Rams left the gym with the Conference win, 92-57.

Next for the AMCATS will be a home game against Norwich on Saturday afternoon at 1pm.
