Four Players in Double-Digits for AMCATS in Loss to Mustangs

NEWTON, Mass – Thursday evening the AMCATS traveled to Mount Ida to play the Mustangs in Great Northeast Athletics Conference action. Though the AMCATS outscored the Mustangs in three of the four quarters a 31-point second quarter helped Ida past the 'Cats, 76-68.

For the AMCATS, four players reached double-digit points. Leading all scorers, senior guard Kayla Odegaard (Milton, Mass) scored 15 points in the game. All of her points came off of three-pointers as she shot five-of-11 from beyond the arch. Senior guard Kristina Russo (South Windsor, Conn) kept her streak of double-digit scoring games going with a 13-point effort for the AMCATS. She also pulled down seven rebounds and racked up five assists. The other two players in double-digits for the 'Cats were junior center Shannon Hoffmiller (Oxford, Conn) and sophomore forward Hailey Moore (Worcester, Mass) who each tallied 12 points for the visitors. Hoffmiller shot four-for-seven from the field and also grabbed nine rebounds. Moore added seven rebounds to her score line. Also, freshman guard Franny Hammond (Worcester, Mass) scored eight points and led all rebounders in the game with 10.

The Mustangs had all five of their starters score in double-digits. Ida were led by senior guard Breanna Muir (Wareham, Mass) and senior guard Jaime Moscato (Taunton, Mass), who each scored 14 in the contest. Senior guard Patricia Liotta (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) and sophomore forward Valerie Martin (Derry N.H.) each had 13 points for the home team while senior forward Imani Bumpus (Dedham, Mass) rounded out the double-digit scoring with 11 of her own.

The first quarter went the AMCATS way as they got out to a 10-point lead in the first eight minutes of the game. From there the Mustangs went on an 8-3 run to end the quarter. The 'Cats led at the end of one, 17-12.

In the second, the tide turned in favor of Mount Ida, who took a 20-17 lead two minutes in to the period. Though the AMCATS fell behind they were able to keep the game close with multiple three-pointers from Odegaard. In the last few minutes, however, the 'Stangs picked up the scoring and took a 43-32 lead in to the half time break.

In the third quarter, Anna Maria did what they could to climb back in to the game but were only able to make up one of the 11 points they had trailed by at the half. They outscored the Mustangs 20-19 in the period but still trailed 62-52 going in the final quarter.

The fourth quarter, again saw AMC outscore the hosts but only by two points. Towards the end of the final 10 minutes the shots were not falling for the AMCATS, and though they pulled within eight points in the final minutes the home team left the gym with the 76-68 conference victory.

The AMCATS will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Standish, Maine to take on the Monks of St. Joe's at 1pm.
