AMCATS Fall to Polar Bears in Coastal Classic Opener

BRUNSWICK, Maine – After an eighteen-day layoff the AMCATS travelled to Maine to take on seventh ranked Bowdoin College in the opening game of the 2017 Coastal Classic. Unfortunately for AMC, it was all Polar Bears as they won going away, 101-36.

The AMCATS were led by freshman guard Franny Hammond (Worcester, Mass) who scored 11 points off the bench for the visitors. Hammond was joined in the scoring column by senior guard Kristina Russo (South Windsor, Conn), senior guard Johanna Burke (Oxford, Mass) and sophomore forward Gina Houghton (Paxton, Mass) who scored seven, six, and five points respectively for Anna Maria.

For the seventh ranked Polar Bears, it was senior guard Kate Kerrigan (Wellesley Hills, Mass) leading all scorers with 15 points. Sophomore forward Maddie Hasson (South Portland Maine) was the only other starter in double digits for Bowdoin as she scored 12 of her own. Off the bench for the home team, junior guard Hannah Graham (Presque Isle, Maine), junior guard Abby Kelly (Bombay, N.Y.) and junior center Cordelia Stewart (Bangor, Maine) each went in to double digits adding 14, 12, and 11 to the tally respectively.

The Polar Bears led this contest from the opening tip, outscoring the AMCATS in the first quarter 36-11. It would be more of the same in the second as Bowdoin once again put up over thirty in the quarter grabbing 32 more to AMC's six to go in to the halftime break with a 68-17 advantage. In the second half, Anna Maria still couldn't hold off the home team. Although the 'Cats outscored their opponent 14-11 in the fourth quarter, Bowdoin walked away with the 101-36 victory.

AMC will be back in action Saturday afternoon at 2pm against Hunter College for their second, and final game of the Coastal Classic.
