Franny Hammond Leads AMCAT Scorers as Gyrenes Leave with W

Paxton, Mass – Anna Maria's Women's basketball team played their home opener Friday night against Ave Maria University, an NAIA opponent from South Florida and the Gyrenes refused to walk away without the win beating the AMCATS 95-38 in the Fuller Center on the campus of Anna Maria College.

Freshman guard Franny Hammond (Worcester, Mass) led the scoring for the AMCATS Friday night as she put up eight points shooting fifty percent from the field in 31 minutes on the floor. Senior guard Maritza Gustave (Fall River, Mass) added six points and five rebounds for the home team. As a squad the AMCATS shot 75% from the free throw line on the night.

The Gyrenes were led by senior guard Lauren Gillingham (Estero, Fla) who scored 20 on the night adding 13 rebounds. At the half time break she had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Gillingham was eight-of-fourteen from the field and three-for-three from the charity stripe for the Gyrenes. Sophomore forward Sarah Miller (Canton, Ohio) posted a 16-point evening with nine rebounds of her own. Along with Gillingham and Miller junior guard Katie Houbolt (Oak Lawn, Ill) and senior guard Jasmine Bateman (Orlando, Fla) each had double digit scoring nights, Bateman's coming off the bench.

Anna Maria was able to keep the game close in the first quarter but were ultimately unable to keep the Gyrenes within reach trailing the visitors at the break 46-20 and a 95-38 final.

The AMCATS will be back in action Tuesday evening, November 21st as Worcester rivals Clark University will travel to Paxton for a 4PM tip from the Fuller Center.
