AMCATS Drop Two with Rivier

Northborough, Mass. – The Anna Maria College baseball team dropped a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) games on Saturday afternoon. Anna Maria dropped 10-6 in game one before falling a close 8-7 battle in game two. The AMCATS fall to 7-27 overall and 0-10 in the conference while the Raiders improve to 3-23 and 2-8 in GNAC play.

 

GAME ONE

 

Joseph Fahey led the AMCATS at the plate going two for three with two RBIs. Camden Brown (Gardner, Mass.) also recorded two RBIs in the loss as he went one for two at the plate. Tanner Jakola (Leominster, Mass.) pitched five innings for the AMCATS scattering seven hits, eight runs (five earned) and notched four strikeouts.

 

Erik Maxfield went two for three with two RBIs to lift the Raiders to victory. Adam Arkell went two for four with two RBIs and Jonathan De La Cruz went one for two with two RBIs on the day. Ryan Schaefer earned the win on the mound, pitching four innings while scattering seven hits, five runs (four earned). Tyler Ferdinand came in for the save recording four strikeouts.

 

Anna Maria got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Joseph Fahey (Auburn, Mass.) started off the inning with a double to center field and Matt Leahey (Rutland, Mass.) followed him with a double to score Fahey.

 

Anna Maria notched three more runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-0 lead. Dylan Carissimo (Tampa, Fla.) singled up the middle to get things started followed by a double from Matt Elliot (Attleboro, Mass.) to put two AMCATS in scoring position. Camden Brown hit a two RBI single to left center that scored Casissimo and Elliot. A single from Fahey scored Brown and the AMCATS took the 4-0 lead.

 

Rivier had a big third inning with seven runs to take the lead for the first time. Brendan Sullivan, Arkell, Jamie Brigham, Ryan Larkin and Maxfield all recorded hits in the inning (7-4). The visitors extended their lead in the top of the fourth as Tyler Ferdin was able to cross home plate on an AMCAT passed ball (8-4).  Anna Maria tightened the score to 8-5 with a run in the bottom of the inning following a Raider error.

 

Rivier was able to notch two more runs in the top of the sixth inning following a two RBI single to right field from De La Cruz. Anna Maria gave it one more try in the bottom of the seventh adding just one more run, but the Raiders held off the rally to clinch the 10-6 victory.

 

GAME TWO

 

De La Cruz led the visitors with two RBIs in game two and Jacob Rayner went two for three with an RBI. Tyler Ferdinand earned the victory on the mound for Rivier as he pitched three innings, scattering four hits, three runs (one earned) and two strikeouts.

 

Jakola led the AMCATS at the plate going one for two with two RBIs and Roy stepped up going two for four with two RBIs. James Marcello (Mansfield, Mass.) took the loss for Anna Maria as he pitched two innings giving up three runs (two earned) and recorded two strikeouts.

 

Rivier got on the board first in the top of the second inning. They notched two runs as Larkin and Maxfield both crossed home plate (2-0). They added another run in the top of the third following an RBI double from Larkin (3-0). Anna Maria got on the board in the bottom of the third with two runs. Fahey got things started for the home team with a single that he ultimately advanced to second on after a Rivier error. Leahey got on base with a single to right field and stole second base to put himself in scoring position. A sacrifice fly ball to center field from Jakola scored Fahey and an RBI single from Jonathan Roy scored Leahey to end the inning with the score, 3-2.

 

Rivier extended their lead to 4-2 with a run in the top of the fourth but the AMCATS showed up with five runs in bottom of the fifth to take a 7-4 lead. Fahey, Jakola, Roy and Carissimo all recorded hits in the big inning for the AMCATS.

 

The visitors came crawling back with one run in the top of the sixth inning and three runs in the top of the seventh to take the ultimate 8-7 victory. Drew Nelley recorded the winning RBI with a scarafice fly to center field that scored De La Cruz.

The AMCATS travel to Norwich on Sunday, April 23rd for a GNAC doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. The Raiders host Saint Joseph's College of Maine tomorrow four a conference doubleheader starting at 1:05 p.m.
