Baseball Suffers Loss to Newbury

Northborough, Mass. - The Newbury College baseball team erupted in the first inning for 10 runs en route to a 17-5 victory over the Anna Maria College baseball team on Tuesday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex. The Nighthawks now sit at 10-6 after the win, while the AMCATS fall to 6-10 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Nighthawks first started with a double by Justin Banks, followed by a single by junior Billy Stephen. Matthew Peluso followed that with a double into the right-center gap, scoring Banks and Stephen for a 2-0 lead. Four consecutive walks would result in two runs for the Nighthawks, as well as loading the bases with no outs, ahead 4-0. Freshman Dante Serino singled in a run, followed by a double for sophomore Radinsky Baez that scored two more.

A Stephen RBI groundout would put the Nighthawks ahead 8-0 with Baez on third and two outs. Peluso stepped up and homered to left-center for his first home run of the season, giving the Nighthawks a 10-0 lead after one inning.

Ingraham and Baez produced RBI groundouts in the second and Sobray and Ingraham struck for more RBIs in the third, putting the Nighthawks ahead 14-0.

The AMCATS showed resiliency in eighth, putting up four runs in the top of the frame. Back-to-back singles by Connor Lavin (Leicester, Mass.) and Darren Belliveau (Baldwinville, Mass.) gave the AMCATS runners on first and second with no out.

An error by the Nighthawks second baseman would load the bases for the AMCATS, setting up Tanner Jakola (Leominster, Mass.) to strike with his bases clearing triple down the first base line. Jakola scored on a Matthew Leahey (Rutland, Mass.) single, cutting into the deficit, 17-5.

The Nighthawks first included the first nine batters reaching base safely, six hits in total, and four extra-base hits in the inning.

AMCAT LEADERS

Belliveau batted 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Jakola finished 1-for-1 with three RBIs and two walks.

NIGHTHAWK LEADERS

Nighthawks junior Matthew Sobray finished 3-for-3, scoring three times. A Sobray triple in the second gave him the season record for most triples (6) and ties him for most triples in a career (7). Junior Matthew Peluso batted 2-for-3, with a double and home run, both in the first. Peluso finished with four RBIs. Senior CJ Ingraham was 2-for-4 with four RBIs.

Nighthawks freshman John Camerota pitched five innings allowing one run on two hits, striking out four. The win moves him to 1-1 this season. AMCATS junior Camden Brown (Gardner, Mass.) took his first loss this season, falling to 2-1.

Both sides will continue their season with NECC opponents. The AMCATS battle Elms College on Friday morning, while the Nighthawks prepare for a three-game series against Lesley over the weekend; all games are scheduled to be played at the New England Baseball Complex.
