ROCHDALE, Mass.- Becker College defeated Anna Maria College 9-2 in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Rochdale Park. The win lifts the Hawks record to 11-10 while the AMCATS fall to 7-22 on the year.
Vaibhav Desai and T.J. Sempkowski paced the Becker offense with three hits apiece, with Sempkowski also added four RBI to his resume. Evan Barrera and Chris Testa chipped in with two hits while combining for three RBI.
Trevor Brown (Gardner, Mass.) led the AMCATS at the plate going two-for-three with two RBIs.
Vaibhav Desai got the Hawks offense going in the bottom of the first when he reached base with a single up the middle. A failed pickoff attempt sailed down the right field line, allowing Desai to make his way to third. Chris Testa put the Hawks on the board with a sacrifice fly, scoring Desai from third.
Desai got the Hawks started again in the bottom of third when he led off the inning with a double into the right field corner. Testa once again brought his teammate home when he singled through the right side of the infield, upping the Becker lead to 2-0. After T.J. Sempkowski made his way to first on a fielder's choice, Evan Barrera put the Hawks in front 3-0 with a triple to centerfield. Barrera would eventually score on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 4-0.
After Becker starting pitcher Nicholas Hawrylciw retired the first 13 batters he faced, Anna Maria's Dylan Carissimo (Tamp, Fla.) broke up the no-hit bid with a single to center. Jacob Zamora (Alachua, Fla.) doubled to center, putting runners at second and third. Trevor Brown then plated both runners with a double into the left centerfield gap, cutting the Hawks lead to 4-2.
The Hawks responded with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on single by T.J. Sempkowski to increase the Becker lead to 6-2.
Sempkowski would single with the bases loaded in the eighth to score two more runs, making the score 8-2. Chris Testa scored the final run of the game when he scampered home from third when pinch runner Daniel Diaz was thrown out trying to steal second.
Nicholas Hawrylciw improved his record to 2-2 on the year after scattering just three hits, over seven innings while striking out five AMCATS. Michael Iacovelli and Eric Trahan (Bristol, Conn.) each tossed an inning of scoreless relief for the Hawks.
Luis Urena (Lawrence, Mass.) suffered the loss after allow three earned runs in six innings of work.
The Hawks return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host Eastern Nazarene College at 4:00 p.m. The AMCATS will try to end a 12-game skid when they host MCLA tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. at the New England Baseball Complex.
