Baseball Earns Two Victories Over Baruch

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Anna Maria College baseball team picked up two victories in a double header with Baruch College on Thursday afternoon. In game one the AMCATS downed the Bearcats, 4-3 and then went on to pick up a 2-1 victory in game two of the day. The two wins were the first wins of the season for Anna Maria as they impove to 2-7 overall this season. The losses drop the Bearcats to 1-5 overall.

GAME ONE

In the first game, the AMCATS earned the final victory with an RBI single in the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie. They kept the Bearcats off the scoreboard for the 4-3 win in the first meeting between the two schools.

Ramon Moreta started the scoring for the Bearcats in the third with an RBI double to plate Gilberto Mendoza, Jr. 

The AMCATS jumped ahead 2-1 in the fourth inning on a two-run single by Matthew Leahey (Rutland, Mass.), but the Bearcats quickly tied it after Edwin St. Hilaire came around to score on a fielding error by Anna Maria.

The AMCATS took a one run lead in the fourth on a RBI single by Joseph Fahey (Auburn, Mass.), but the Bearcats tied it again in the fifth on another fielding error that plated Mendoza, Jr. for the 3-3 tie.

The score remained tied until the seventh when Anna Maria junior, Nate Gray (Kingston, N.Y.) smacked an RBI single for what stood as the game winner.

Leahey led the AMCATS to victory going two-for-four at the plate with two RBIs on the day. Tanner Jakola (Leominster, Mass.) pitched a complete seven innings for the AMCATS, allowing just three hits. He notched two strikeouts in the victory.

GAME TWO

The second game featured a solid pitching duel, but the AMCATS scored first and held on for the 2-1 win.

Bearcat's Paul Sirakowski, was the hard-luck loser, despite a solid line of six innings, three hits, and no runs allowed to go along with five strikeouts.

The AMCATS scored their first run on a sacrifice fly RBI by Leahey in the third inning and scored another run in the fourth on a passed ball for the 2-0 lead.

The Bearcats scored their lone run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Matthew Donofrio. They couldn't push another run across to suffer the 2-1 loss to Anna Maria. 

Camden Brown (Gardner, Mass.) pitched six innings allowing just three hits and two runs, he added five strike outs to earn the victory. Matt Elliot (Attleboro, Mass.) earned the save for the AMCATS coming in to pitch one inning and posting two strike outs
