AMCATS Soar to Two Victories Over Owls

Northborough, Mass. – The Anna Maria College baseball team picked up two victories in a double header with the University of Maine – Presque Isle on Friday afternoon. In game one the AMCATS downed the Owl 12-4 and then went on to pick up a 20-9 victory in game two of the day. The AMCATS now sit at 4-8 overall while the Owls dropped to 0-12 on the season.

 

GAME ONE

 

The Owls opened up scoring in game one after a sacrifice fly ball from Martin Egan scored Matt Cauchon. The AMCATS tied it up in the bottom of the first. James Marcello (Mansfield, Mass.) started the AMCATS off with a triple to deep center field. A single from Matt Leahey (Rutland, Mass.) scored Marcello (1-1).

 

The Owls earned another run in the top of the third but Anna Maria was able to tally three more runs at the bottom of the third to go up 4-2 with one RBI off of a single from Nate Gray (Kingston, N.Y.).

 

The Owls tightened the lead to 4-3 after Saul Nunez was put into scoring position from an AMCAT error and a single from Justin Mason helped him cross home plate in the top of the fourth. Anna Maria broke away with six runs in the bottom of the inning and took a 10-3 lead. Dylan Carissimo (Tamps, Fla.), Camden Brown (Gardner, Mass.), Darren Belliveau (Baldwinville, Mass.), Marcello and Leahey all recorded hits.

 

The AMCATS would tally two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and the Owls were able to notch one more run in the top of the seventh, but Anna Maria ultimately took the final victory, 12-4.

 

Leahey and Marcello both went three-for-four at the plate to lead the AMCATS to victory. Leahey also recorded three RBIs. Carissimo also joined the leader board going two-for-three with three RBIs in the win. Tanner Jakola (Leominster, Mass.) earned the victory for the AMCATS pitching six innings and scattering five hits, three runs (two earned) and five strikeouts.

 

GAME TWO

 

Game two saw 20 hits from 38 at bats for the AMCATS. The home team scored 20 runs in the 20-9 victory. Gray went one-for-two at the plate with three RBIs, Trevor Brown (Gardner, Mass.), Jacob Zamora (Alachua, Fla.) and Leahey all added three RBIs for the AMCATS. The majority of the game's scoring came in the bottom of the second inning as the AMCATS racked up 14 runs. Camden Brown earned the win for the AMCATS as he pitched four innings, five hits, five runs and six strikeouts. Belliveau came in to earn the save as he pitched three innings with three hits, four runs and one strikeout.

The AMCATS host the Owls again tomorrow night (March 18th) for a double header beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the New England Baseball Complex.
