Baseball Sweeps Buccaneers On The Road

BUZZARDS BAY, MA - On Saturday, March 16th the Anna Maria College baseball team traveled to Buzzards Bay, MA to take on the Mass Maritime Buccaneers for a doubleheader. The AMCATS won game one 4-0 and game two 16-1.

Game One: Scoreless after four innings, the AMCATS were the first on the board with a surge of runs in the top of the fifth inning. David Doherty got things started for the AMCATS with a single to send Jeremy Rosenberg home. Next would be Brady Aylward who walked with bases loaded to get Andrew Denison home to make it a 2-0 game. The AMCATS last pair of runs would come off the bat of Josh Batchelder who singled to center field helping Doherty and Jarryn Barber score to give the AMCATS a 4-0 lead. 

Nick Choate would help the AMCATS secure the win by striking out six batters in a row. Choate would end up throwing all seven innings, giving up no runs and totaling 15 strikeouts. 

Game Two: The AMCATS surged in game two for a total of 16 runs. Jarrod Marifiote got the scoring started in the top of the third with a single up the middle sending Andrew Denison and Jarryn Barber home to make it 2-0. Marifiote would go on to steal second forcing a throwing error from the Buccaneers catcher allowing David Doherty to score on the error. Josh Batchelder would set up the AMCATS next run after he doubled out to left field sending Marifiote home to give the AMCATS a 4-0 lead. A two RBI double from Jeremy Rosenberg would be the last scoring play in the third inning for the AMCATS as Batchelder and Aylward ran in to make it a 6-0 game.

The AMCATS saw another pair of runs in the fourth inning after Barber scored on an error by the centerfielder. Doherty would get the AMCATS eighth run, scoring off a fielders choice play. Doherty would help the AMCATS get their only run in the fifth inning after a double out to right center helped Barber score to make it 9-0 going into the sixth inning.

The sixth inning would see another surge from the AMCATS, starting with a double down the left field line from Matt Beuka resulting in two runs. A sacrifice fly from Barber would give the AMCATS their next run making it a 12-0 game. Doherty would fire out yet another double to help the AMCATS lead improve to 13 to close out the sixth inning. The Buccaneers would finally answer in the bottom of the sixth making it a 13-1 game however the AMCATS would pile on three more runs in the seventh to secure the win over the Buccaneers. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Nick Choate threw a career high of 15 strikeouts in seven innings against the Buccaneers while also earning a shutout.
  • Choate currently has 40 strikeouts in 20.1 innings pitched averaging 17.70 strikeouts per game.
  • David Doherty went 6 for 8 in the batters box with 5 RBIs and 2 doubles.

WHAT'S NEXT: 

The AMCATS will be back in action on Sunday, March 17th where they will take on the Brandeis University Judges for a non-conference matchup. Opening pitch is set for 1:00pm in Waltham, MA.
