Softball Swept at Albertus Magnus

Junior Carli Matrisian (Milford, Conn.) combined for five hits, including a solo walk-off home run, to lead the Albertus Magnus softball team to a two-game sweep of Anna Maria College on Sunday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.

With the wins, Albertus improved to 14-11 on the year and 7-7 in GNAC play, while Anna Maria fell to 3-13 overall and 1-13 in league action.

In game one, Matrisian went 2-for-3 with two RBI, a double, and a run scored, while Alyssa Puccilli (Milford, Conn.) added one hit, two RBI and a run scored.  Brittney Urciuoli (Newington, Conn.) chipped in with two stolen bases for the Falcons.

Albertus tallied four runs in the fourth inning to take a dominating lead.  Veronica Hribko (East Haven, Conn.) led off the inning with a single before two errors and a passed ball put runners into scoring position.  Puccilli's one hit plated two Falcons as Albertus took a 2-0 lead.  Elaina Maio (West Haven, Conn.) followed with a sacrifice, which scored the Falcons' third run of the game before senior Jamie Vesciglio (Stratford, Conn.) added an RBI groundout in the frame.

Albertus added two more runs in the fifth inning as Amanda Jessey (East Haven, Conn.) led off the frame with a single and a stolen base.  After a fielder's choice and an error kept runners on the corners for the Falcons with no outs, Matrisian connected on a two-run double to give Albertus a 6-0 lead.

Brianna Longley (Milford, Conn.) earned the win for the Falcons as she improved to 7-4 on the year. Longley went the distance as she shutout the AMCats, while allowing just two hits.

Anna Maria's Nichole Lowe took the loss on the hill for Anna Maria as she tossed 3.2 innings, while allowing four runs on five hits.  Alexis Romano came into the game to pitch 2.1 innings, while allowing two runs on three Albertus hits.

In game two, the Falcons lead throughout the entire contest and secured the 10-2 victory as Matrisian hit a solo walk-off home run to end the contest with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Albertus plated two runs in the first inning as Matrisian singled home two runs to give Albertus an early lead.  In the second, Albertus added three more runs as Urciuoli, Jessey and Devon DeLallo (Redding, Conn.) connected on RBI singles in the frame.

Two more runs were scored by the Falcons in the fourth inning as Jessey knocked in a run on a ground out before Matrisian's double scored another Falcon run.

In the sixth, Anna Maria scored its first two runs of the day led by an RBI double by Ashley George.

In the bottom of the inning, Urciuoli led off the frame with a walk before stealing second.  She later scored on a double by Jessey.  Jessey followed, scoring on a DeLallo single.  On the play, DeLallo was thrown out trying to advance.  With one out, Matrisian homered to give the Falcons the walk-off victory as they led by eight runs after five innings.

Shyleen Ortiz (New Britain, Conn.) earned the win on the hill for the Falcons as she allowed two runs on five hits, while striking out three batters.

Angela Vousboukis earned the loss as she threw 3.1 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits.  Romano also gave up four runs on six hits as she threw two innings.
