Lady AMCATS Swept by Wildcats in GNAC Softball Action
Cranston, RI – The Anna Maria College softball team was swept in double-header action by Johnson & Wales University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference Action (GNAC) on Friday afternoon at Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex. JWU won game one 12-3 and posted an 11-0 shut-out in the nightcap.
With the loss Anna Maria drops to 0-12 overall, 0-3 in GNAC play, while the Wildcats move to 9-7 on the season, 2-0 in conference action.
Game One – Anna Maria 3, Johnson & Wales 12
In the opener, JWU raced out to a three-run lead in the top of the first as Taylor Cwalinski (Jackson, NJ) delivered and RBI double to center field followed by a Anna Maria miscue then an RBI single off the bat of Diana Amendolara (Newtown, PA) to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead.
The AMCAT responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first when with one out sophomore Elizabeth Haggerty (Charlton, MA) walked and classmate Samantha Miller (Dudley, MA) followed with a double down the right field line to set the table for first-year Kaitlyn Moran (Leicester, MA). Moran stoked a single down the right-field line scoring Haggerty and freshman Kayla Garczynski (Norwood, MA) delivered an RBI infield single to cut the deficit to 3-2 after one complete.
The Wildcats plated three runs in the top of the second, including a two-run home run by Tayla Gardner (Orangeburg, NY) to build a 6-2 advantage. JWU added a pair of runs in the fourth and another four insurance runs in the fifth to move to a 12-2 lead.
Anna Maria would add a run in the bottom of the fifth, an RBI double off the bat of Miller, for the 12-3 final.
Cwalinski earned her fourth win of the season for JWU allowing three runs on six hits with 12 strikeouts.
Game Two – Anna Maria 0, Johnson & Wales 11
The Wildcats once again opening the game with a three spot in the visitor half of the opening frame. Sophomore Cynthia Proby (Bremerton, Wash.) laced a two-run double down the left field line and came home on an AMCAT pass ball for the 3-0 lead.
Anna Maria could only muster a pair of hits in the nightcap. Justine Lalonde (Shirley, NY) delivered a one-out single in the second, while Moran collected a single in the bottom of the fourth.
Johnson & Wales broke the game open with five runs in the top of the second and added three insurance runs in the third for the 11-0 final.
Anna Maria returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Rivier University for a GNAC double-header starting at 9:00 a.m.
