Lady AMCATS Drop Two on Final Day in Florida

Clermont, Fla – The Anna Maria College softball team fell to WPI and Sage College on the final day of Spring Break participation in the Dot Richardson Invitational in Clermont, Florida. WPI posted a 7-2 win over the Anna Maria in the first game of the day, then the AMCATS were downed by Sage College 10-1 in the night cap.

 

GAME ONE: Anna Maria 2, WPI 7

 

Anna Maria opened the scoring, notching a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. With one out freshman Katie Moran (Leicester, Mass.) scorched a single up the middle and Kayla Garczynski followed with a walk to put base runners on first and second. Two batters later Elizabeth Haggerty laced a triple to right center field to give Anna Maria the 2-0 lead. WPI answered in the bottom of the frame capitalizing on some shaky AMC defense to pull ahead 3-2.

 

WPI would pull ahead 5-2 in the bottom of the third and add two insurance runs in the sixth inning for the 7-2 final.

 

Anna Maria collected five hits on the afternoon, Ashely Anderson and Samantha Miller each had a hit along with Moran. Haggerty was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI's. Junior Cristina Turley had a stolen base. Sophomore Angela Vousboukis was tagged with the loss, pitching 2.1 innings allowing five runs on six hits.

 

GAME TWO: Anna Maria 1, Sage 10

 

Sage College never trailed in game two, posting five runs in the first inning en route to the 10-1 final.

 

Anna Maria scored their only run in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Nichole Lowe opened the frame with a walk then swiped second. A Cristina Turley groundout advanced Lowe to third and she scored on a passed ball.

 

Anna Maria could only muster four hits in the nightcap. Lowe, junior Justine Lalonde, freshman Katie Moran and Elizabeth Haggerty each stroked singles. Lowe had two stolen bases, while Haggerty had one swipe.

 

Freshman Alexis Romano suffered her first loss of the season going three innings allowing six runs on eight hits.

 

Anna Maria will head back to Paxton, Massachusetts on Saturday and look to open the post-Spring Break season on Thursday, March 20 at Wheelock College.
