Softball: Sharks Sink AMCATS

Worcester, Mass. -  The Anna Maria College softball team suffered a pair of setbacks to visiting Simmons College at New Balance Field on Saturday afternoon. The Sharks posted a 10-0 victory in game one and swept the AMCATS 8-0 in the nightcap. Anna Maria dips to 1-17 on the season and 1-7 in conference play, while Simmons improves to 14-4 on the season and 7-1 in the GNAC.

Game One: Anna Maria 0 Simmons 10

The Sharks posted runs in every inning while Anna Maria was held to just two hits as the Sharks took game one 10-0.

Emily Cunningham would deliver all the offense Simmons would need in the first inning. With runners on second and third Cunningham slapped a single to left field scoring Mikaela Caracciolo. Just one batter later Heather White laced a 2-run single to centerfield to push the lead to 3-0.

The Sharks would tack on a run in the second and three runs in the top half of the third to increase their advantage to 7-0. Aliana DeNoncour clocked a 2-run home run in the fourth inning and Simmons would tally one last run in the top of the fifth for the final.

Anna Maria struggled at the plate all day, as Samantha Miller broke-up the no-hitter in the fourth inning with a single. Freshman Kaitlyn Moran had the other hit for the AMCATS. Danielle LeBlanc picked up the win for the Sharks improving to 4-0 on the season. Angela Vousboukis took the loss for Anna Maria.

Game Two: Anna Maria 0 Simmons 8

Simmons pitcher Amanda Cordeiro allowed just one hit, while four different Sharks combined for eight hits en route to the 8-0 victory in game two.

The Sharks reeled off five straight hits to open the game to take a 3-0 lead.  With two outs in the frame Cordeiro helped her own cause with a single to right field that plated two more Sharks.

AMC's best scoring chance of the afternoon came in the home half of the second inning. Junior Justine Lalonde tripled to deep centerfield to lead off the frame, but was gunned down at home when trying to score two batters later on an Ashley George ground out to second base.

Simmons would add a pair of insurance runs in the top of the fourth.

Cordeiro improves to 4-2 on the season, while Nichole Lowe suffers the loss for Anna Maria.

Anna Maria returns to action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Mount Ida College for a GNAC doubleheader.
