
Men's Ice Hockey Falls Short Against Trailblazers In MASCAC Semifinals
AUBURN, MA - On Sunday, March 2nd the Anna Maria College men's ice hockey team hosted the Trailblazers of MCLA for the MASCAC Semifinals. The AMCATS lost the game 2-1.
The Trailblazers struck early with a goal just over five minutes into the first period off the stick of Cade Herrera with help from Sean Schifferl. The Trailblazers goal would be the only one scored in the first period despite the AMCATS outshooting MCLA 20-13.
After the Intermission, the Trailblazers would again score an early goal in the second period to take a 2-0 lead over the AMCATS with just under twelve minutes left to play in the period. The AMCATS again out shot the Trailblazers 26-8 maintaining possession for most of the game.
It wasn't until eight minutes into the third period that the AMCATS finally broke their silence after Matthew Byrne tipped in a goal off a pass from Derek Raposo. Trailing by just one goal, the AMCATS continued to apply pressure to the Trailblazers defense, putting up 18 shots compared to MCLA's 7. Mathew Gover would stop 63 of the AMCATS 64 shots on net to help secure the victory for the Trailblazers.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Matthew Gilbert finished the season with a career high of 32 points in 27 games for the AMCATS.
- As a Defenseman, Derek Raposo also led the AMCATS with 31 points in 27 games played.
- Matthew Gilbert and Guillaume Coulombe both finished their Careers at Anna Maria with 100 games played. (Gilbert played in 101)
- The AMCATS finished the season with 19 wins for the most in the programs history.
- The AMCATS also went on a 10 game win streak for the longest win streak in the programs history.
