Four AMCATS Find Twine In Win Over Panthers
AUBURN, MA - On Thursday, January 23rd the Anna Maria College men's ice hockey team hosted the Panthers of Plymouth State University for a MASCAC conference matchup. The AMCATS won the game 4-2.
Just five minutes into the first period, the AMCATS found the back of the net as Brandon Della Paolera capitalized on an AMCAT power play. Tobias Omholt and Samson Mouland earned the assists on the play. Not long after, Mouland found the back of the net with some help from Derek Raposo to help make it a 2-0 game. The AMCATS would close out the period with a beautiful tipped in goal from Matthew Byrne off a shot from Omholt, making it 3-0 at the end of the first.
The second period would end up going scoreless with the help of Cole Johnston who posted 13 saves to help maintain the AMCATS 3-0 lead. The game wouldn't see its next goal until almost seven minutes into the third period where the Panthers found their first goal of the evening. Matthew Gilbert answered quick however, scoring the AMCATS third power play goal of the evening making it a 4-1 game with almost ten minutes left to play in the final period. The Panthers managed to score one last goal before Johnston and the AMCATS defense locked things down to secure a 4-2 win over the #1 seeded Panthers.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Matthew Gilbert keeps his point streak alive with a goal against the Panthers making it his sixth game in a row with a point or more.
- Cole Johnston posted a season high of 42 saves in the win over the Panthers.
- The AMCATS have gone 40% or higher on the power play in each of their last three games.
COMING UP:
The AMCATS will be back in action on Saturday, January 25th where they will head to Westfield, MA to take on the Owls of Westfield State University for a MASCAC conference matchup. Opening puck drop is set for 5:35pm.
