MEN’S ICE HOCKEY FALLS TO WILDCATS

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY FALLS TO WILDCATS

AUBURN, MA - On Friday December 13, 2024, the Anna Maria College men's ice hockey team hosted the Wildcats of Johnson and Wales University for a non-conference matchup. The AMCATS lost the game 4-1.

The Wildcats would open the scoring for the evening with about ten minutes into the first period, off a turnover from the AMCATS that would put the Wildcats on the board first. The Wildcats would follow up with their second goal of the game with about one minute left in the game off a breakaway to take a 2-0 lead over the AMCATS. The AMCATS would continue to put the pressure on the Wildcats goalie, but all chances the AMCATS would have in the first period were denied by the Wildcats goalie. It would be the AMCATS trailing the Wildcats 2 to 0 at the end of the second period despite outshooting the Wildcats 27 to 13.

The second period, the AMCATS would continue the pressure, and momentum against the Wildcats, creating multiple opportunities on net. It would be the Wildcats goalie to stand tall in net, and to take away any chances or scoring the AMCATS would get on net. Despite the AMCATS not being able to score, in the second period, the AMCATS defense would tighten their play up and keep the Wildcats off the board completely in the second period. It would be both teams to head to the locker room at the end of the second with the score remaining the same 2 to 0 in favor of the Wildcats.

The AMCATS would look to come out in the third period strong and offensive minded as they are trailing the Wildcats by two goals. The start of the third period would however not go in the AMCATS favor as the Wildcats would get a powerplay about two minutes into the third and would score for their third goal of the game. The AMCATS however after multiple opportunities and chances would finally respond with a goal from Dylan McElhinny off a pass from Stirling Nash making it a 3-1 game. The time would continue to pass in the third period and even with the chances the AMCATS would get, the Wildcats goalie would continue to keep them at just one goal in the game. The AMCATS would pull their goalie for a momentum shift and an extra attacker to continue the pressure against the Wildcats. But it would be however the Wildcats who would add a fourth goal on the empty net with a little less than two minutes remaining in the game to put the comeback out of reach for the AMCATS. The game would end with a final score of 4-1.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Dylan Mcelhinny would score his first goal of the season against the Wildcats.
  • Matthew Hennessey would make 24 saves against the Wildcats.
  • The Wildcats would beat the AMCATS for the second straight year.
