Tennis Tops Becker, 5-4

LEICESTER, Mass. – The Anna Maria College women's tennis team snapped a three-game winless streak with a 5-4 win against the Hawks of Becker College on Monday afternoon.

With the win, the AMCATS improve to 2-4 on the season, while the loss drops Becker to 4-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After the Hawks battled back to tie the match at 4-4 following a 6-4, 6-3 win by sophomore Jacqueline Andrade (Somerset, Mass.) at number two singles over Morgan Rodriguez (Ludlow, Mass.), the team victory came down to number one singles. Anna Maria's Callie Mulcahy (Charlton, Mass.) picked up a break in the second set to get the 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Becker's Jennifer Lord (Fall River, Mass.) to seal the win.

DOUBLES

The AMCATS opened the match by taking two of three doubles matches. Mulcahy and Rodriguez paired up for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles, while Nicola Zamira (Mashpee, Mass.) and Ashley Fernandes (West Bridgewater, Mass.) took an easy 8-0 win as the No. 2 pair.

The Hawks' lone doubles victory came at number three where freshman Jessica Leger (Auburn, Mass.) and senior Kerry Saltvick (Bakersfield, Calif.) rolled to an 8-2 win over Marrissa Leonard (Billerica, Mass.) and Jessica Palmer (Sutton, Mass.).

SINGLES

In addition to Mulcahy's deciding singles win, the AMCATS also saw wins by Zamira at No. 3 singles and Fernandes at No. 4 singles.
