Sharks Swim Past Tennis, 9-0

PAXTON, Mass. - The Simmons College women's tennis team saw five different players record a win at both singles and doubles this afternoon in a 9-0 victory over host Anna Maria College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match in Paxton, Mass.

The Sharks improve to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the AMCATS fall to 1-4 and 0-1. Simmons extends its regular-season win streak over conference opponents to 53 straight.

DOUBLES

Junior Theresa Reinhard (Canton, Ohio) (3-1 singles, 5-1 doubles) and senior Meg Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.)  combined at first singles to defeat Anna Maria's duo of sophomore Nicola Zamira (Mashpee, Mass.) and junior Callie Mulcahy (Charlton, Mass.), 8-0.The Sharks' pair of senior Katie Crowley (Reading, Mass.)  and junior Ashley Pierce (Carver, Mass.)  downed the AMCATS' first year Morgan Rodriguez (Ludlow, Mass.) and junior Ashley Fernandes (West Bridgewater, Mass.), 8-1, at number two doubles. It was the only game in doubles action that Anna Maria took off of Simmons as first year Ashley Chen (Hilo, Hawaii)  and sophomore Winnie Yee (South San Francisco, Calif.)  combined for an 8-0 decision over juniors Marissa Leonard (Billerica, Mass.) and Jessica Palmer (Sutton, Mass.) at third doubles.

SINGLES

First year Laura Plaza (Mexico City, Mexico) picked up her first collegiate victory for the Sharks and did not drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win over senior Freya Sprous (Ware, Mass.) at sixth singles. Yee won the deciding point for Simmons, breezing at fifth singles, 6-0, 6-0, over Leonard to give the visitors a 5-0 margin. Chen was also spotless in singles play for the Sharks, winning at number three, 6-0, 6-0, over Mulcahy. Crowley dropped just one game at second singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Zamira for Simmons, while Pierce defeated Fernandes, 6-2, 6-0, at number four singles. Reinhard capped the day for the Sharks, winning, 6-0, 6-0, at first singles over Rodriguez.

The AMCATS will be in action again on September 21 when they head to nearby Leicester, Mass. to take on Becker College at 3:00 p.m.
