Tennis Stumbles in 2015 Season Opener

DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's tennis team opened its 2015 season in fine fashion, shutting out Anna Maria College, 9-0, in a non-league match at the UMD Tennis Courts.

The Corsairs swept the doubles and won all six singles matches in straight sets, surrendering only six games in the three doubles matches and just eight total games in a dozen sets of singles. It was the Corsairs first shutout victory since Oct. 12, 2013, when they blanked Western Connecticut.

A trio Corsairs had successful debuts. Freshman Jenna Lahaie was a winner at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles; freshman Kaela Dunn won at No. 1 doubles and sophomore Samantha Rollings was triumphant at No. 6 singles.

Sophomore Mollie McCaffrey was perfect on the day, winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles, and teaming with senior co-captain Kristen Rose for a 8-0 victory at No. 3 doubles. Rollings also won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. Rose was a 6-1, 6-0 victor at No. 4 singles.

Senior co-captain Maggie LeBrun teamed with Dunn for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles over junior Jessica Gautieri (North Attleboro, Mass.) and freshman Morgan Rodriguez (Ludlow, Mass.). UMD's Dunn and the AMCATS' Gautieri were high school teammates for two years at North Attleboro. LeBrun then followed up with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles.

Lahaie and sophomore Kerry Magoon were 8-1 winners at No. 2 doubles. Lahaie then defeated Gautieri 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Magoon beat Rodriguez 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

Anna Maria returns to action on Tuesday, September 8th when they travel to Lesley University for a 7:30 p.m. tilt.
