Goudreau Breaks Record and AMCATS Clinch Playoff Berth in 7-2 Win against Mount Ida

PAXTON, Mass.—Senior Nicole Goudreau (Harrisville, R.I.) became the all-time program singles wins leader with a 6-3, 6-1 win against Olivia Budney as the Anna Maria College women's tennis team downed the Mustangs of Mount Ida College 7-2 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

Goudreau's win was the 22nd of her four-year career. She bests the previous record of 21, set by assistant coach Emily Williamson '13 last season.

With today's win, the AMCATS clinched the fifth-seed in the GNAC Tournament. They will travel to the University of St. Joseph for the quarterfinal round on Wednesday.

In addition to her win at No. 2 singles, Goudreau also teamed up with Jessica Gautieri (North Attleboro, Mass.) for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles against Rebecca Levy and Budney.

The AMCATS led 3-0 after doubles play, as the tandem of Nicola Zamira (Mashpee, Mass.) and Callie Mulcahy (Charlton, Mass.) took an 8-2 win at No. 2 singles and Katelyn Edelson (Berlin, Conn.) and Marrissa Leonard (Billerica, Mass.) made quick work of their pairing at No. 3 doubles with an 8-0 win.

Levy was awarded the win at No. 1 singles following an injury forfeit by Gautieri. The AMCATS saw a 6-0, 6-0 win by Zamira at No. 3 singles. Edelson downed her opponent 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, and Mulcahy bested Kaytlen Putnam in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

The Mustangs tallied their second win at No. 6 singles in extra points, as Yuiana Chairez downed Leonard 6-3 in the first set before Leonard rallied for a 6-2 win in set two. Chairez won the tiebreaker 7-2.

Anna Maria improves to 4-8 overall and 2-4 in GNAC play, while the loss drops the Mustangs to 1-9 overall and 1-5 against GNAC opponents. The Mustangs have also qualified for the GNAC tournament and will travel to Suffolk for a 7:00 p.m. match on Wednesday.
