Tennis Falls to Blue Jays, 7-2

PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College women's tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision to the Blue jays of the University of Saint Joseph on Monday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Paxton Sports Center.

The Blue Jays carried a 3-0 win after doubles play. The AMCATS tandem of Jessica Gautieri (North Attleboro, Mass.) and Nicola Zamira (Mashpee, Mass.) put up a strong fight at No. 1 doubles, as they forced extra points but were ultimately defeated, 9-7, by Rebecca Mauri (Meriden, Conn.) and Meghan Toth (Naugatuck, Conn.).  

The AMCATS did damage at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. At No. 2, Nicole Goudreau (Harrisville, R.I.) won a hard-fought battle in tiebreaker points against Amanda Willhoft (Manchester, Conn.). She took the first set 7-5, dropped the second set 6-4, and took a 10-7 victory in the tiebreaker point.

Zamira also won at No. 3 singles, making quick work of Toth, 6-4, 6-2.

In addition to all three doubles pairings, the Blue Jays also saw singles wins by Mauri, Lisa Wawrzynowski (Newington, Conn.), Emely Chenard (Meriden, Conn.), and Tara Smith (Palmer, Mass.) at No. 1, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles, respectively.

The AMCAT tennis team will be back in action on Friday, October 17th for a 3:00 p.m. GNAC match at Albertus Magnus College.
