AMCATS Soar to 8-1 Win Against Hawks

PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College women's tennis swept all three doubles pairings and won five of six singles matches en route to an 8-1 win against Becker College on Monday afternoon in non-conference action.

With the win, the AMCATS improve to 2-6 overall, while the loss drops the Hawks to 1-11.

The No. 2 doubles duo of juniors Katelyn Edelson (Berlin, Conn.) and Nicole Goudreau (Harrisville, R.I.) made quick work of their pairing, as they gave the AMCATS an early 1-0 lead with an 8-1 win against Becker's Livia Smith (Worcester, Mass.) and Chenylle Mercado (Tyngsborough, Mass.).

Sophomore Jessica Gautieri (North Attleboro, Mass.) and freshman Nicola Zamira (Mashpee, Mass.) teamed up for a hard-fought 8-5 win against Jennifer Lord (Fall River, Mass.) and Jacqueline Andrade (Somerset, Mass.) at No. 1 doubles, while sophomores Callie Mulcahy (Charlton, Mass.) and Marrissa Leonard (Billerica, Mass.) also took an 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Gautieri earned her second win of the day with a quick 6-4, 6-1 win against Lord. Goudreau took a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles, while Zamira downed Smith 6-0, 6-4 in the third slot.

Edelson made quick work of Kerry Saltvick (Bakersfield, Calif.) with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4, followed by a 6-0, 6-0 win by Mulcahy against Mercado at No. 5 singles.

The final singles pairing was a close contest, as Leonard took the first set 6-1 before Dana Mahan (Manville, R.I.) rallied for a 6-4 win to force a tiebreaker. Mahan won the tiebreaker 10-3 to score Becker's lone point of the day.

The AMCATS round out the rest of the 2014 schedule at home, beginning with Saturday's 12:00 p.m. Great Northeast Athletic Conference match against Suffolk. Becker will be back in action on Tuesday for a 3:00 p.m. match at Mitchell.
