Men's Soccer Suffers 8-1 Setback to JWU

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The Johnson & Wales University men's soccer team scored twice in the first 10 minutes and would not look back, erupting for an 8-1 win over the AMCATS of Anna Maria College in Wednesday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

The win boosts JWU to 12-4 overall and 7-1 in league play, while the AMCATS fall to 3-10-1 overall and 2-6 in GNAC action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

JWU saw goals by Byron Arboleda and Tucker MacPherson in the fifth and seventh minutes for a quick 2-0 lead. The AMCATS responded with an unassisted goal by sophomore Derrick Casey (Worcester, Mass.) in the 23rd minute, but the Wildcats would add two more first-half tallies for a 4-1 lead at the midpoint.

The Wildcats added four unanswered goals in the second half en route to the victory. JWU held a 34-7 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.

GOALKEEPERS

Sophomore Patrick Thornberg (Wayland, Mass.) totaled 14 saves in net for the AMCATS and faced 22 total shots-on-goal. Nick Tolman recorded one save and faced two shots-on-goal.

The AMCATS travel to Rivier for the final GNAC regular-season game of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
