Strong Second Half Pushes Men's Soccer to 4-1 Win Over Suffolk

PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College men's soccer team saw two goals from juniorChristopher Mattioli (Sturbridge, Mass.) as the AMCATS downed the Rams of Suffolk University 4-1 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday.

With the win, the AMCATS improve to 1-6-1 overall and 1-2-1 in GNAC play, while the loss drops Suffolk to 0-9-1 overall and 0-3-1 in league action.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING

Today's win marks the first for the AMCATS against Suffolk since joining the GNAC in 2011. Last season, the Rams downed Anna Maria 5-2 in Boston.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Rams struck first in the 12th minute on a goal by Tkhen To (Kiev, Ukraine), but the AMCATS tied the score in the 38th minute on a penalty kick by Mattioli to send the game to halftime deadlocked a 1-1.

The AMCATS took control of the score on back-to-back scores in the 59th and 61st minutes, as freshmen James Bowhile (Worcester, Mass.) scored his first collegiate goal on an open breakaway and minutes later found Mattioli for the third goal of the day. Freshman Momodoulamin Kabareh (Worcester, Mass.) also assisted on the goal.

In the 83rd minute, another AMCAT milestone was reached as freshman Cashios Okyere (Worcester, Mass.) registered his first collegiate goal.

GOALKEEPERS

The physical battle did not see many shots land on target, but Anna Maria's Eliot Kumza (East Haven, Conn.) tallied three saves in the win. Suffolk's Nicholas Chamma (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) recorded one save on the day. Anna Maria held an 18-10 advantage in shots on the day, while Suffolk dominated corner kicks, 5-0.

The AMCATS continue their four-game home stand on Tuesday when they host Becker at 4:00 p.m. Suffolk hosts Emerson on Monday.
