Bowhile Hat Trick leads Men's Soccer to Blank Becker, 6-0

PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College men's soccer team soared past the Hawks of Becker College 6-0, registering their first shut out of the season in non-conference action on Tuesday evening.

With the win, the AMCATS improve to 2-6-1 overall and stand at 1-2-1 in GNAC play, while Becker drops to 0-12 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Freshman forward, James Bowhile (Worcester, Mass.) notched his first hat trick of his collegiate career with one goal in the first half and two more in the second as well as tallying three out of the five assists on the day to lead the AMCATS to victory. Anna Maria demanded offensive play throughout the game and saw three more goals from Christopher Mattioli (Sturbridge, Mass.), Jamison Crowley (Southington, Conn.) and Dalton Gill (Florida, N.Y.).

The AMCATS held a commanding 29-10 advantage in shots over Becker as well as a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.

Becker had their best chance to score late in the second half as they were awarded a penalty kick following a foul in the box, but Anna Maria's netminder Patrick Thornberg (Wayland, Mass.) recorded a save on the play.

SCORING

First Half: The AMCAT's first goal came in the 14th minute of play as Mattioli received a pass from Bowhile putting the ball past Becker's netminder, Matthew Castro (Shirley, Mass.) who made a diving effort to stop the shot. Just three minutes later the last goal of the half was scored by Bowhile as Mattioli fed him the ball in front of the net and Bowhile fired it into the goal to put the AMCATS up 2-0.

With just 7:33 remaining in the half the match was delayed due to an AMCAT injury forcing both teams to take an early half time and play 53:33 in the second half.

Second Half: Bowhile's second goal of the game came in the 46th minute of play as Crowley fought for the ball and finally found his way through Becker's defensemen to dish it off to Bowhile who ultimately found the back of the net. Nine minutes later Crowley found himself tallying a goal on the day as sophomore teammate Zakaria Amellal (Worcester, Mass.) assisted on the play.

The final two goals of the game were both scored within a minute of each other. In the 57th minute of play Bowhile notched his final goal of the game as he broke past the defense and took Becker's netminder one on one. Building off of this momentum the AMCATS decided they were not done scoring. Bowhile sent a cross from the right side of the net and the ball found Dalton Gill who made a head first dive at the ball and putting it into the left corner.

GOALKEEPERS

The match did not see many shots land on target in Anna Maria's defensive end, but AMCAT netminder Thornberg tallied four saves in the win. Becker's goalkeeper Matthew Castro saw a lot of action; recording ten saves on the day.

WHAT'S NEXT

The AMCATS look to increase this two game winning streak as they host the Cadets of Norwich University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Friday, October 9 for a 4:00 p.m. start. Becker travels to Southern Vermont on Saturday.
