Cadets March to 3-1 win against Men's Soccer

PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College men's soccer team suffered a 3-1 loss to the Cadets of Norwich University on Friday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

With the loss, the AMCATS fall to 2-7-1 overall and 1-3 in GNAC action, while the win boosts Norwich to 8-3-1 overall and 4-1 in league play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Anna Maria scored first but Norwich scored more in the soggy, cold battle at AMCAT Field. The rain was a challenge for both goalkeepers today as visibility was low. The AMCATS finished with an 19-17 advantage in shots but Norwich made theirs count, as they held a 9-5 edge in shots-on-goal. The visitors also held a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.

SCORING

First Half: Anna Maria opened scoring with a 35-yard shot by Christopher Mattioli (Sturbridge, Mass.) that slipped through the hands of Norwich keeper Stefan Skoff (San Jose, Calif.) in the 30th minute. 12 minutes later, Norwich would even the score on a free-kick by Jeff Purdy (Grantham, N.H.) that broke through the defensive wall but blinded AMCAT netminder Elliot Kuzma (East Haven, Conn.).

Second Half: 5:26 into the half, Alec Brigante (Colchester, Vt.) on the left wing found Jacob Zimmerman (Litchfield, Mass.) in the middle. Zimmerman sent a quick, low, shot past his defender and into the AMCAT net.

Nearly 30 minutes passed until the Cadets scored again, as Chase Hainey (Fryeburg, Maine) took the ball off an AMCAT defender and chipped in the 20-yard goal.

GOALKEEPERS

Kuzma totaled six saves in net for the AMCATS in the complete-game effort. Skoff made four saves for the Cadets.

WHAT'S NEXT

Anna Maria hosts their final home game of the regular season on Monday, October 12th at 4:00 p.m. The team will host a brief senior day ceremony prior to kickoff.
